Lease on JLA

Will the Ilitch family renew their lease with the city of Detroit for Joe Louis Arena, or will they build a new arena?

As long as they take the boards with them, and give the new arena the same name.

There has been an awful lot of talk about the need for Cobo Hall to be bigger and moving the arena seems to be the best way. The last I heard, Illich was trying get some property in the area of the fox theature so they could build. Did they manage to get the property?

Yes, Ilitch has property behind Fox theater that he owns...a lot of property. Ilitch is probably waiting to find out what exactly the fate of Cobo Hall is because that will determine their lease.

I could see them signing a lease for a year or two while they build a new arena.

They still have it leased through next season, but they have to let the city know whether or not they will renew sometime this month.

It will most certainly not have the same name and I'm not sure why people are so uptight about it. There's a statue downtown honoring Joe Louis, let's let a company buy the naming rights so the burden on the taxpayers is eased. I'll admit, I'd hate for it to become the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Center or something like that, but a longtime sponsor like Kroger? That's fine by me.

A new arena is a must. Olympia Entertainment lacks a major concert venue, and the city loses out on revenue from major concert tours as they all go to the Palace. The estimate on renovating the Joe to bring it up to modern standards is only about $50 million less than building a totally new arena and Illitch owns about 3 whole city blocks behind the Fox that everyone knows is for a new arena... some of the people he's bought the land from have even said as much to the press.

The city needs to demolish Cobo Arena to expand Cobo Hall, Illitch owns a lease on Cobo Arena for 70 more years. He's playing a game with the city over that lease, angling for more tax money for the new arena in exchange for breaking his lease. He was very against the regional Cobo commission for that reason. The tax funding would come from extending taxes on hotels and casinos, just like it did for Ford Field and Comerica.

The deadline to renew the lease is June 30.

I just noticed last night that all Northwest ad space has become Delta ad space... the Delta Center used to be the arena in Salt Lake City, but I think it would fit here.

Boards and the Horn!!

I dont see them keeping the name. Olympia didnt move over and I dont expect JLA to move over to a new one. It will most likely be some advertisement arena, which ive never been a fan of but oh well. Maybe we can make it Little Caeser's Palace

Cobo needs to expand or they will lose the auto show, which to them is very important. I know its not the sole reason, but the Auto Show is 1/12 of their yearly showing and IMHO thats very important and profitable for the city. Hell, the USA today said a few weeks ago that they might lose the auto show (detroit) in 2012 to the Rock Financial Center in Novi. That would be horrible for the city.

I love the Joe. I love it. I will miss it like many did Olympia and Tiger Stadium. But it is indeed time to move on. The bathroom situation is the worst in the world. Illitch could make a lot more money if he has lower bowl suites like the palace does, which is something they said the next one will have. A new arena could also mean mroe affordable tickets, which definitely needs to happen as well.

Its probably atleast a two year project to make a new arena. They more then likely will ask for three years so that gives them one year to plan and 2 years to build it. We should know something more concrete later this month or possibly next year.

Hopefully, they do something better about the parking then they did with Comerica Park. Talk about a horrible idea there.

I've seen this sentiment all over... since Little Ceaser's is a privately held company, it would be essentially like Illitch putting more of his own money into the arena and thus it's unlikely to happen.

It was more of a joke then a realistic vision.

From what I've been told, Illitch wants to build the arena behind the fox, adding to the downtown area where the tigers and Lions already are.

Thing is, he wants some tax breaks from the city because he will be pumping so much money into downtown. From my point of view, that's not much to ask, but the city sees it otherwise. He was willing to front about 80% of the money, but the city won't budge on the rest of it.

IMO, **** Detroit's city council.

Ilitch owns the next 70 years of the Cobo Arena lease. If he fights to prevent that lease from being broken, there is no way the Cobo Hall expansion plan can be put into place and the Auto Show will move to Novi. You can bet he's playing that card, and you can also bet he'll win. The fact is the city is already losing revenue from major concerts to the Palace, a new arena creates a final nail in the coffin of Oakland County's entertainment dominance in the area... especially with the expanded Cobo that will result.

If the city screws the Wings here, after making the ludicrous concessions they did to GM when they were never planning on leaving anyway, I'd think it's entirely down to the fact that the Wings play to a mostly white, suburban clientele. And if that's the case, I'd hope Ilitch moves the team to Auburn Hills immediately.

While I dont think it will ever happen in Mike Ilitch's lifetime, I wholeheartedly agree.

If Detroit doesnt want the Wings, I know of a certain area of the Metro that does.

In a player poll in THN, Joe Louis was ranked the most intimidating arena to play in on the road. I think this is because of the history and classic feel to it. It would be a bad idea to build a new rink. Upgrade it if you must, but don't build a new one unnecessarily.

The players would love an arena in Oakland County, considering they all live there.

The Joe's footprint is pretty maxed out, you can't fix most of it's flaws as it is. Keep in mind, the Joe was built on a rushed schedule because the Norris family gave the city a one year timeline before they left the city. It was so poorly managed, they didn't realize they forgot to build a press box until well into the construction. It was outdated before it was built.

Ilitch wants to build a new arena behind the fox theature. Something about him wanting an intertainment complex. If he got the land behind the Fox Theature, then he'll opt to move.

The Joe is obsolete. They need a new areana. Who knows, build a new arena and perhaps the NHL will allow Detroit to host the all star game.

A new arena will be just as hard to play in just as soon as the pennants are moved over. If they're smart, they'll build one with more seats and design the acoustics to make a really loud building.

I'd say that could be more of a testament to who plays at the Joe. If the Wings home rink was on a pond surrounded by sunflowers and puppies, it would still easily crack the top five.

I'm sure he wants to move. He does have a lot of land, but it's a question of whether or not he has all the land he needs. The city of Detroit would be dumb not to let the arena move so they can expand Cobo Arena, but as everyone knows, the city of Detroit rarely does the smart thing.

I hope the Joe just gets renovated and not demolished. I love absolutely everything about that arena...that is of course until I need to use the washroom facilities. I've seen those lines and they are borderline ridiculous. I think the Red Wings have among the lowest ticket prices among competitive teams for the time being, which is obviously a plus. I'm not sure what the prices were before the economy crashed but I'm more than willing to pay $80 USD for lower bowl seats. Late in the season I got walk up tickets against the Blues 15 rows from the ice just off centre. I sat lower bowl 3 times this season...probably woundt have been possible before the lockout and/or economic situation.
