The Kings problems last year were not on the defensive side of the puck....and do you really think that Dean would trade him if the team is in the playoff hunt....even if he refuses an extension?

Pronger is 35 and one year from UFA.

Johnson is 22 and the #5 pick is 18. I don't know.

Tim Gleason, Eric Belanger, a # 5 overall for Chris Pronger and Oleg Tverdovsky.

This deal as described smacks of desperation to make the playoffs next year. It flies in the face of building for the long term. If true as described I would officially no longer be a DL supporter.

Exactly. These last two deals of Williams for O'Sullivan and this deal show signs of desperation to just make the playoffs.

I am in this boat....I was holding out hope that Dean would make the right move this year....getting Lecavalier, Gaborik or Heatley would be a major step forward.....but this....I cannot see anything positive in this deal.

Where are the Lombardi supporters now?

This is a tad out of left field.

This is really weird. I'm not really sure what to make of this. While it would be nice to have Pronger, that is a lot to give up for an old guy. And all I can think is DL has been glued to the playoffs like the rest of us and can't help but want a taste of that.

Maybe he flips Pronger+ for Heatley or Lecavalier?

Pronger loves So Cal...so he prob won't be hard to resign unless St. Louis makes him an offer...

Maybe Ottawa would do that....but there would be no reason for Tampa to trade for an expensive defenseman on the downside of his career.

Well, there is the fact that if this is true, Dean finally got Pronger. I really hope that's not the price we just paid to get him though...

Lets not jump the gun there Ron. Why don't we wait to find out if this went down and if so, if there aren't more details (like players and picks involved).

I'll be honest, my immediate reaction is w/t/f?

This causes two issues...it puts the Kings in a bind b/c now both Frolov and Pronger are one year away from UFA and Kings probably can't shell out 7 million for Gaborik.

I do not see that as a positive....IF dean traded Frolov, Kopitar, Doughty, Hickey, Moller and the 5th overall pick to get Malkin would that be a win for Dean?

Waiting for confirmation, the details of the trade, etc.

I wonder if we're intending to keep Pronger, or whether there's a third team involved. Maybe he's going to Ottawa or Tampa Bay, who want a more proven talent in return for their proven talent.

This could also be misreported. Wouldn't be the first time.

Not a bad deal for the Kings. Giving up Johnson and teh 5th is a lot, however both are fairly unknown quantities. It's nice to talk about eventually fielding a good team and winning, however at some point you actually have to do it. Acquiring Pronger makes the Kings that much better and really puts the defense into the upper echelon of the league. Now sign a forward like Gaborik, Havlat, or Hossa and you have a very competitive team on your hands.

Well....at this point there is no evidence that this is a fabrication....until then I think this is a done deal.

I hope this isn't true, but if so I am guessing that Johnson was traded for Pronger, and the 5th pick was for Pronger's elbow.

You can only bottom feed for so long before a total losers mentality takes over the whole team and organization. Even if you make this trade your team is still stacked with young talent and in no way do I think this limits your long term ability. Youd still have Kopitar, Brown, Frolov, Doughty, Hickey, Teubert, Moller, Simmonds, Voinov etc. I know accumilating top end prospects is the sexy thing nowadays but your team has more then enough to sacrifice to make a deal like this. Im a Leafs fan and very pro rebuild, but I think this deal is a good move for your team. The experiance that Pronger will bring to the young core of players will be priceless.

Its about time your team gets serious and stops bottom feeding for top picks.

I think this is an even trade (if true).

There's no denying what a dominating presence Chris Pronger is when he is on the ice. He instantly upgrades the power play and even strength play. He's good for 40+ points. He's solid as a rock and mean as Chuck Norris's mustache. You can't move him off the puck. He'll be a veteran presence on the blue line and help the young guys grow.

I can't honestly say any of that for JJ right now.

The #5 overall pick is a heavy price to pay, but you have to give to get.
