Buffalo - Philly (Briere)

To Buffalo:

Daniel Briere

To Philly

Tim Connolly
2nd Round Pick

Pro's for Philly. They shed about 2m in cap space and a long ass contract. Plus pickup a 2nd round pick as a bonus.

Pro's for Buffalo. They get their captain back, upgrade their center position and excite the fanbase again.

Why does Buffalo want to pay him now when they didn't want to a couple years ago?

This isn't even a bad deal, but I still expect you to get flamed for some reason.

I don't think Buffalo would trade back for him because the reason he left was because they couldn't afford to pay him what he's making now.

He left because they decided to offer Drury the $$$ instead. Though, that was "before" Vanek signed that crazy RFA sheet.

No thanks from Buffalo. Briere hasn't looked himself since he left. He's been injured and we'd be getting even smaller bringing him back. I didn't even mention the contract. Briere was the one who wanted to stay more than Drury. Drury bolted first and when we focused on him Briere got another offer and left. Although Connolly's been injured, he's looking good for next season and his performance is great when he's healthy. Plus Darcy wouldn't want to give his 2nd away.

Why is that? I know we traded the one we got for Kotalik to Toronto for Dom. Did we trade the other one to San Jose in the Rivet deal? If we did, I don't know why I'm not remembering it.

Really? Briere looked great for most of 2007-08, especially in the playoffs. He was getting it back together after the injury heading into the playoffs this year.

Agreed with that fact but I don't think the Sabres will want him back. Too much money. No reason to trade Connolly who I think is just as good as Briere when they're both healthy (which I know is never for Connolly but still) plus a second rounder for a 7 million dollar salary.

I agree... he only looked off this year because of an injury.

People are also not giving him credit because he plays behind two great centres on his own team... which he has zero control over.

The Powe-Giroux-Briere "3rd" line was looking very good at the end of the season this year, too. If Lupul and/or Knuble are gone this offseason, then having Briere as 1st or 2nd line RW is going to be nice. When he is healthy, all he does is produce. He is just signed forever.

Connolly is a weird case. It's like he's going to score 40-50 points a year, no matter how many games he plays. He could start off the season at a 2 PPG pace for the first 25 games, then he'd probably tear something and be done. Or he might be healthy for 82 games, and have an off year.

Considering Briere can nix a deal anywhere and that the Sabres have burned that bridge... he'd turn this down flat.

It also puts the pinch on Buffalo in terms of cap space going forward, so Regier would likely say no as well.

Another reason this is a no go for Buffalo is that Connolly is also one of their top penalty killers and is a pretty good defensive center. Having Briere and Vanek would mean that about 15 mil of cap space is tied up on two offense only forwards. Not exactly a recipe for success.

yes we did.

ours and the one from the Bernier trade went to SJ for Rivet, then we got the one from carolina(?) and dealt that to TO for Moore

And it's actually an $8 million salary this upcoming year

Nothing that Buffalo would be willing to pay unless we got tremendous value along with him and Hecht (arguably our worst contract) went the other way. This won't ever happen.
