Am I the only one here that doesn't think Holmgren is going to sign a center?

Richards, Carter, Briere, Giroux -- I don't think we're going to see 4 centers on the top 2 lines.

As of right now:

Gagne - Richards - Briere
Hartnell - Carter - Giroux
JVR/Carcillo - Lappy - Asham
Cote - Powe - Carcillo/callup

Timonen - Parent
Pronger - Coburn
Carle - Jones

Emery
Boucher

PP:
1st:
Gagne - Briere - Giroux
Timonen - Richards

2nd:
Hartnell - Carter - JVR
Pronger - Coburn

PK:
1st:
Gagne - Richards
Timonen - Parent

2nd:
Hartnell - Carter
Pronger - Coburn

Laperriere and Giroux are the go-to players when another forward sits in the box.

If we sign a cheap winger for the 1st or 2nd line (it's hard to tell which is which), we could run a third scoring line centered by Richie with JVR (should he be NHL ready) and either Asham or Lappy on the other side. With this Richie would get less 5-on-5 ice time and could concentrate on the special teams. Cote would be benched then or sent to the minors (he has a two-way contract, right?).

Holmgren said he wanted to add a little bit more offense. Does anyone think he is trying to sign an older vet to a one year contract? Bertuzzi, Shanahan, Recchi?

I hate Bertuzzi. Of them I would like Recchi the most.

I wouldnt be opposed to it, but I rather have a checking center who is great on faceoffs than another scorer.

Briere and Giroux over a full season should make up for the goals that Lupul/Knuble gave us, and hopefully Hartnell can take Knuble's place on the PP, but we need to be better at shutting down the opposition.

Others have talked about the whole send pairs out there and rotate the other winger like Hitch would do somewhat and how Detroit has always run their lines, however, I dont think we can do this with the wingers we have.

If we went with

Gagne Richards
Hartnell Carter
Briere Giroux

What wingers that we currently have would you be comfortable putting in the top 6??? None that I can think of currently. I am comfortable that Richards and Gagne will make anyone better, but Carter seems to only work with certain types of players.

Just wondering if he said that recently and where? Not that I dont believe you, but I think we need alittle more offense, but Homer didnt seem to be going out to get some.

“We’re still looking for offense,” Holmgren said. “… But the one area Ian Laperriere will add is he’s a role player who can lift a little of the burden off some of our guys in other roles, such as penalty killing and faceoffs. He’s a warrior type player. He’s very durable.”

“We’d like to add one more offensive-type player if we could,” Holmgren said. “Like I said, we lost 52 goals.”

Recchi won't help us on the faceoff dot. We just need a vet center. If we got Pecca for cheap I'd be happy.

With Pronger coming in, I hope Kimmo's ice time will be cut in half.

I think we'll see D time like this:

Timo pairing- 22 minutes
Pronger- 22 minutes
3rd pairing 16 minutes

Well, everyone seems to think Briere is better on the wing....and Giroux is naturally a RW, he just happens to be good at faceoffs and plays well at center, but the guy is THAT good he could probably play defense.

I dont necessarily want to see his time cut in half, but I want to see him get less time going up against guys that will beat the hell out of him like Ovechkin and Malkin. Let Pronger handle those bigger guys.

What I really, REALLY want to see is

Pronger Parent
Coburn Timonen

Parent's future is as a shut down defender, who better to play with than Pronger??? Pronger will also cover for any mistakes he might make....I want these two getting the top shut-down minutes.

Coburn was at his best playing with Timonen, they had great chemistry together so on one hand you get the most out of Coburn and on the other hand, having Pronger and Parent play the shut-down minutes, frees up Timonen to play a more "finesse" role and use his offensive ability with I think has suffered a little cause of all the time he has had to focus on defense.

Now, when we play Pittsburgh, you can have Pronger matched up with Malkin, and Timonen matched up against Crosby.

Problem is, who covers Staal

I know what you meant, but I dont think "cut in half" is a good choice of words . I dont to see Kimmo playing 10-15 mins a game...

You're probably right. I don't think I used the best words. This is what happens when I come on here in the morning. Back to my post though. It's like mikedifr said. I'd like to see Pronger deal with the bigger guy. Let's see Malkin hit Pronger from the back, like he was doing in Dett. I'd like to see Pronger do the dirty work, and play great D. And, have Kimmo be Kimmo.

As said in the signing thread, I am not really familiar with Laperriere right now so I preliminarily went with the ones from last year.

No, you're not the only one. The coach has said so himself, but apparently I'm the only one who picked up on it because every coach on this board ignores it.

Oh man, Imagine if we got Bertuzzi. I dont want him, but our team would be so ridiculous in terms of big *******s.

I did pick up on that, I just dont agree with it.....This team no longer has the depth on the wings to do that.....Again, Asham and Lappy should not be playing with Carter and Richards.

They definitely need a center who can take faceoffs.....If they roll the 3 lines, not only do they need to sign a center that can take faceoffs, they need another winger that can play in the top 6 on a regular basis. How in God's name can we afford both of those things????

EDIT: Besides, the coach is a complete ****** so I dont care what he says

Actually I think Bertuzzi would fit next to Carter and Hartnell perfectly, I just dont see how we could afford it.

The only salary we can shed is Jones or Carle.

After that, you are talking moving Briere, Gagne, Carter, Richards or Hartnell.

Which is why I dont think it can happen. Even though I dont agree with it, for arguments sake lets go with what the moron is proposing:

Gagne Richards ?????
Hartnell Carter ?????
?????? Giroux Briere

I dont mind Powe or Carcillo playing with Grioux and Briere. However, the top two spots will come down to:

Lappy
Asham
Powe/Carcillo
Cote
Nodl
JVR

or someone else signed or brought up from the Phantoms. Unless Nodl and or JVR are clearly ready, I dont want to see any one of those guys playing with Richard and Carter. So now you go from just needing a 3rd line center to needing a 4th line center, a top 6 winger or two, plus the dmen to replace BOTH Jones and Carle in order to even come close to having the cap space to fill all that.

If you go with

Gagne Richards Briere
Harntell Carter Giroux
Carcillo ?????? Lappy
Kalinski Powe Asham

You can move Carle and probably get the center, and a cheap dman for close to Carle's salary, or at worst, you need to fill in a 3rd line center and 2 bottom dmen instead of needing wingers that could play in the top 6 as well

Yeah Stevens said it, but it depends who else Holmgren adds. Maybe he adds someone like Recchi.

Gagne-Richards-Powe
Hartnell-Carter-Recchi
Lappy-Giroux-Briere
Carcillo-Betts-Asham

I think Powe would fit with Richards, and Lappy will help protect the midgets on the 3rd line. I do still wish we would add a faceoff specialist, maybe Blair Betts for the 4th line if we arent going to get a 3rd line centre.

I just don't see a point in discussing something that isn't going to come true.

We don't need a centre who can take faceoffs if we go by what the coach says (you know, reality?), our guys have to get better. Richards should be the guy we trust for big draws, so ideally he'll be better next year.

But yes, Holmgren has said he wants another offensive player, presumably to replace one of our lost RWs. Jones still needs to be waived in order to do that.

The team is not set in stone yet, I'm just saying get used to the idea that this mystery third line centre probably isn't coming. We don't need one since we have Carter, Richards, and Giroux at centre.

To be fair Richards had 2 injured Shoulders for who knows how long and shoulder strength is very important for faceoffs
