1997 NHL Entry Draft Re-Do (#1)

Following the massive success of the other re-do's, I've decided to do the 1997 re-do and remind people that voting for the 1998 re-do is still open. The battle for #10 certainly looks intriguing as last I checked 3 or 4 players where tied for first in that poll.

I have an original list of 15 players in this poll but I'm depending on you guys to tell me who to add, here's a list of stats of some of the players picked in 1997:

Player Pos GP G A Pts

Joe Thornton C 836 265 577 842
Marian Hossa RW 775 339 380 719
Patrick Marleau C 871 276 334 610
Olli Jokinen C 799 237 281 518
Sergei Samsonov LW 738 208 294 502
Brenden Morrow LW 591 173 216 389
Kristian Husselius LW 547 153 212 365
Maxim Afinogenov RW 569 134 200 334
Mike York C 579 127 195 322
Ladislav Nagy LW 435 115 196 311
Kyle Calder LW 576 114 178 292
Daniel Cleary RW 614 98 151 249
Brian Campbell D 493 42 205 247

Paul Mara D 639 63 176 239
Magnus Arvedson LW 434 100 125 225
Joe Corvo D 434 62 138 200
Eric Brewer D 623 48 131 179

Pos GP W L T G.A.A.

Roberto Luongo G 544 230 232 64 2.57
David Aesbischer G 214 106 74 17 2.52

In this first poll I voted for Joe Thornton.

Luongo. Pretty clear choice, in my opinion.

Thornton. Ok, he played poor in playoffs but still elite top 10 forward in game who can produce at least 90 points in regular season.

Luongo is overpaid and overrated in playoffs goaltender.

I can't stand Luongo and think he is overrated as well but he is the #1 choice, Thornton is #2, Marleau is #3 and Morrow IMO is #4.

Thornton. Like Luongo, he's had a few down seasons, but unlike Luongo, he's been the best player at his position before, and has a well-deserved Hart trophy.

Neither has an playoff advantage over the other.

Looking at the list, this really was the draft of regular-season wonders. Thornton, Luongo, Hossa, Marleau, Jokinen - so much regular season success, so much... nothing in the playoffs. Weird.

campbell has been on a few playoff runs, but i'd be inclined to add him to that group too. other than that big hit on umberger, it's hard to remember anything he's ever done in the playoffs, and i was a big sabres fan for their back to back final four runs (and i watched the entire vancouver/chicago series this year).

You just completely countered your logic.

Thornton is not great in the playoffs... but regular season he is in the elite top 10 and produces top end results.

Luongo you 'claim' is not great in the playoffs (i beg to differ, one game/series does not ruin a career)... but regular season he's in the elite top 3 and produces top end results.

They're the same, not opposite.

Don't try to bring in pretend logic when its a sour, bitter opinion of your own.
