Can somebody explain to me the voting system in Detail? How can Richards lose it if he got the most first place ballots? It is just beyond me.

Usually a points system, Ie;

1st = 3
2nd = 2
3rd = 1

I think that's a pretty crappy voting system. If you have a voting system which is dependent on placing it should factor more heavily into it. I would make it a cascading:
The player with the most first place votes gets first place. Then from the remaining players the player with the most first and second place votes combined, third with third second and third place votes combined and so on. Of course starting with 5th place it would be a total votes list.

It's just too screwed up if a person wins an award from votes that said someone else should win the award.

That would be all fair and good, in an unbiased system. However, the system lends itself to bias and the current point system works how it should. The fact Richards lost means that more people saw him as the third best, as opposed to the second best.

The right player won the award.

Richards only lost by 3 points, and actually had more first place votes than Datsyuk

All the sports books had Richards as the favourite. In the next couple years, the passing of the torch will take place.

After looking at the broken down tallies, it looks like Richards lost because some people put off the wall players on their ballets and left Richards completely off, whereas Datsyuk was able to squeeze into these people's ballets for 4th and 5th a few more times. Kinda lame.

Just ask Tim Tebow how he feels about a point system.

Although, maybe he wouldn't make a bad comment, not him, no.

Quotes of the night

"Hope my English is better than Pavel Datsyuk English." - Alexander Ovechkin

"Want me to thank your wife for you too, Manny?" - Tim Thomas

"Huh, ugh. A wich Ou vesh ken." - The handicapped presenter who should not have presented

Steve Sullivan's wife. What a beautiful woman.

Anything Pavel Datsyuk said, since it was hilarious to watch. (In a good way, not so much making fun of him.)

While I agree his story is sad, and that Yzerman did the right thing in 1998 by putting the cup on his lap and pushing him around the rink, Konstantinov was in no condition to present an award last night.

My bet is that he wanted to. His condition has been improving recently and spends a lot of time with the Wings.

It shouldn't go overlooked, Julien's tribute to Pat Burns was nice and concise.

Thats really interesting because I always figured that because Richards plays for the Flyers (and the NHL hates the Flyers) that Datsyuk would win. I mean he did, but it was closer and maybe not as anti-Flyer as I thought.
