I think think the Rangers have enough toughness in the lineup with Byers, Dubinsky, Avery and other scrappy players. I dont think the enforcer plays that big of a role anymore i really dont. If it did Colton would be resigned. The Rangers cant afford to waste a roster spot on a guy like that when they have been sleeping at the bottom of the league in GPGA, and are looking to play a more uptempo forecheck game.
Bingo.

Just goes to show how unique a player Zack Kassian could be if we somehow managed to snag him in the draft. Safe to say he will be at least a 3rd liner--real potential to be a top 6 forward and projects as a legit heavyweight as well. Being able to play this guy 15-20 minutes a night and line him up against other power forwards like Ovechkin and Malkin and make their lives at least somewhat miserable from time to time. Kassian seems to go hunting for the big hit once in a while much like Ovechkin or in the past Lindros or Messier used to do.

Anyway I think some might be asking a little bit too much of Dane Byers. I expect him to be a player--someone who will be able to hold his own against most other tough guys but asking him to hang in with guys like Brashear or Godard is way beyond him. FWIW plays like Brashear's hit at least in the regular season need to be answered. Other teams will take note that they can get away with liberties when playing the Rangers otherwise.

The Rangers will sign Chris Neil and have Byers as the 13th fwd
They will let Betts go and replace him with Joel Lundqvist
4th line of Sjo (RFA) - Lundqvist (UFA) - Neil (UFA)
They will find a big fighting goon as 7th defender instead
You heard it here 1st

Good luck to Colton Orr btw
Dagoon must be going mad

Um - lines 1-3 could be something like:

Antropov (UFA) - Drury - Gaborik (UFA)
Callahan (RFA) - Dubinsky (RFA) - ??? (trade/Zherdev)
Avery - Anisimov (Rookie) - Korpedo (RFA)

Gomez, Rozie, Zherdev (we could possibly keep him on the 2nd line if terms are agreeable) are traded for picks and a new 2nd line winger and a veteran D
Voros + Riss in Hartford or elsewhere

Redden - MDZ
Staal - Girardi
Mara - Gilroy

Veteran goon on D through trade

Neil will cost too much; Byers can do the same job at a fraction of the cap hit.

Joel Lundqvist just signed a 6 year deal with Frolunda to go back to the SEL.

Nice try.

Yeah - like contracts in the SEL ever carried any weight when the NHL approaches a team

I doubt Byers can do Neils job as of now - but agree he (Neil) may be too costly...

i hear what ur saying. i think korpedo should be on the 3rd line this year anyway. i actually thought voros played well in one of the games against washington. him, anisimov, and i guess it was sjostrom cycled very well and he seemed to play his best since october in that game. i would hope to resign betts and id actually like a 4th line of byers betts voros if they dont play that much and when they do they where down the opposition with solid forechecking and cycling. betts will still get ice time since he is a world class penalty killer.

Yea i think Brooks is reading this wrong... Colton is not a priority, we have more important fish to fry at the moment. If we lose Colton oh well but im sure if hes patient Glen will get to him.

after being off the kassian bandwagon for a while, the thought of him being a 25 goal scorer and playing the way he does in the OHL is a very nice thought. nobody likes playing against power forwards and he will fight so we wouldnt need to carry a 4th liner that doesnt do much else but fight.

God Help Us

Kinda a drag to see, but we have to trim the fat somewhere. We have Byers coming up from the pack anyway [voros is a wannabe in my eyes at this point]. I do have to say the Orr kicked his efforts up a notch this season with his skating, noticed it right off the bat with all his training last summer. Too little too late if it was in effort to stick around broadway though.

Certainly don't want to see any of our guys on the other end of the left handed haymaker

Soryal is at least a year or two off.

Dagoon told us this well over a month ago. Personally, I think enforcers are a bit overrated, but I still like having one around. Sad to see Orr gone.

Gomez to Montreal for 2nd 09 + Laraque

Kills two birds with one stone AND Montreal moves some salary while adding a 1b center.

Dupont projects as more of a power forward than an agitator/enforcer from what I've seen, and Pyatt is a smaller two-way center.

Byers is most NHL-ready imo.
BUAHAHAHAH That's exactly what I was thinking.

As would I. You can have a physical presence on all 4 lines then.

I think Montreal is one of the teams you might be able to swindle on a deal. Its not a desirable location to play in.

Id be interested in expanding the deal and picking up PK Subban...of course who wouldn't!

Why wouldn't we sign, and trade him if he has enough value to land a multi-year deal with someone?

Interesting point... I wonder, does Gomez' list of teams he can't be traded to get updated in July or October? I ask because I doubt Montreal was on his list last season (when they seemed to have a bright future), but very well could be on his list for the upcoming season.
