LAK/COL - Frolov for the 3rd

To LA: 3rd overall pick

To COL: Alexander Frolov + conditional pick if he doesn't resign.

Colorado reasoning: Cody McLeod was the Avs 3rd leading goal scorer this season, so they need more goals. Frolov has averaged 25 goals per season for his entire 7 year career. So you know what you're getting from him. Frolov joins Smyth and Wolski to make a very solid trio for the Avs on the left side. This also enables the Avs to trade Smyth if they're really looking to do that. And since Sakic has 1 or 2 more years left in him, Frolov is going to help the team more than Duchene in those years.

Los Angeles reasoning: According to this (not Eklund), the Kings are looking to trade up to 3rd. This would allow them to grab Duchene, and he and Kopi would form a dynamic 1-2 center pair. They would also keep the 5th pick, where they can grab Schenn or MSP to replace Fro eventually. (They could also trade it to Toronto, who desperately wants it.) LA also have plenty of cap space, so they can go after a Gaborik or Havlat or Hossa to replace Frolov right away.

Obviously the big question is, is this fair? It depends on how high you value potential. Duchene's certainly is high, but like I said, you're basically guaranteed 25 goals with Frolov. And since Fro has 1 more year left on his contract, the Avs get a pick in 2010 if he doesn't resign.

No, not really. Does this really need to be explained?

Unless a contract is absolutely out of the picture, no way that the Kings trade vets for youth

Not even going to mention how much the Avs wouldn't do this...

Avs say no. No reason to.

Avs haven't drafted this high since they moved to Colorado, I bet they keep the pick.

Must be a Kings fan that thought of this, horrible. A soon to be UFA for the 3rd pick, why not take Wolski to

seriously.....

I won't clown you completely VanBuren..I just think Colorado's not in a position to give up a 3rd overall if they're not getting a big time player(s) in return...Frolov's good, but he's not a complete player and Colorado has a chance to land Duchene who's suppose to be pretty complete at the Center position.

Martin, you really aren't considering the Avalanche's long-term needs with this deal. This is a team that needs to restock their prospect pool. To keep this proposal from being laughable, you would need to throw in a 2009 2nd and that "conditional pick" would need to be something impressive, like a 1st and 2nd in 2010. And even that probably wouldn't be enough. Team aren't just sitting around waiting to help out the Kings.

At "worst," Colorado lands Duchene. They have a chance at JT/Hedman.

We'll give Heatley for the 3rd overall + a piece. Why not go for the 50 goal man?

Cause the salary cap wouldn't let us.

There's really no reason for the kings to keep the 5th if they acquire the 3rd. It would cost them too much to try to get the 3rd without giving up the 5th.

Plus, the kings have 14 picks. Twice as many as the average team. If they wanted to move up it would be a combination of picks traded (+ possibly prospects depending on the picks)

Meh, Frolov isn't really worth the 3rd overall. Colorado gets hosed here... Not to mention that Frolov is a UFA at the end of next season, an extension with like the most financially stable deal ever before they would consider it and even then... The value isn't really there. Must add more from LA, but I don't really see why the Avs would do this in the first place... If I was them, I would definitely keep the 3rd overall and rebuild through the draft and try to maintain my vets/core to stay as competitive as possible while doing so.

Why would Colorado do this? They're better off keeping the pick.

Actually the Kings only have 13 picks....they traded away a 2nd in the Williams deal.

Ponikarovsky had more points that Frolov last season.

Poni for the 5th overall pick?

You can see the issue here.

Not that I would do this deal, because I probably wouldn't, but I could see Colorado going for something like this:

3rd OA + 33 OA(maybe 63 OA instead??)

for

5th OA + J. Bernier

Probably have to be Frolov and Hickey or Moller (if you're set on Frolov). Frolov's value is nowhere near the 3rd overall pick. The Avs would need the equivalent of a good piece and a premier prospect in return to deal this pick.

come on, you cant even compare the two... it has nothing to do with points.. how many more points did he have anyways? 3-4? yeah and frolov had like 10 more goals in less games...oh yeah, frolov has averaged 30 goals over the past 3 years, poni has never hit 30...

frolov brings much more to the table then point production.. he creates so much space for his teammates and protects the puck better then anyone..
