I remember being disappointed when the Rangers selected Brian Leetch. The knock on Craig Patrick's draft picks were they were all smallish Americans or soft Swedes/Finns. The Rangers needed a center and Patrick attempted to trade up to #2 with LA to select Jimmy Carson. The Rangers couldn't complete the deal and took Leetch.
If Leetch never suffered the nerve damage in his shoulder during the 1992-93 season, he could have been better. He never fully regained the strength in his shoulder.
It's interesting to see that Leetch is the youngest of that group.
The decline and end came fast.
He could still play at a high level (though not his best) when Sather traded him, I think, emotionally, he maybe lost a little motivation after that, though. It's got to be a bit of a letdown to leave a team for the first time so late in your career.
Well deserved. We really miss his particular skills very badly. Watching the '94 games on June 14th, I was again staggered by his ability to strip the puck off of forwards and turn the game around. Congrats to one of the greatest Rangers ever!
