Maybe he'll fail, but we won't know until we give him a chance to.
I think people knew he could spot start and be effective though. He was a starter before. Curry is about as unproven as a goaltender can get.

I feel confident in Curry based on what he has done down here in the AHL, but he was injured during playoffs...so I almost wonder if he will start here this year because of that. Just to get back in shape, etc. And I also worry about how well he'll do if he sits on the bench for weeks at a time while Fleury carries the majority of the load. It's not going to do him any good to sit constantly. Just my opinion.

I'm sure Shero will sign another NHL/AHL tweener to battle it out with Curry for the Pens' backup spot. Some are always tons available every summer.

If we want a real, NHL-proven backup, Manny Legace would be a good option at his age (36) and after a weak season where he was even waived by the Blues and went unclaimed. He can't be too picky this summer, I guess. One of the most "under the radar" goalies in the last 10 years, he'd still make a good 20 game backup.

I don't see Gerber's stock going up, I think we could get him for less than he's worth. Maybe because I like the Sens a bit too but I'd hope to get Gerber before throwing Curry in there. The Wings were smart to take Ty instead of relying on their AHL goalie, we'd be stupid not to try and make a move for a LEGIT backup.

Weekes is a good goaltender but I never liked him. I think it's because he seems to get seriously hurt in a lot of games, and then it comes out later that he has some mild strain or sprain. Last season, during one of the few nights Brodeur had the night off (aside from his injury), Weekes came in and tweaked something in his leg, acted like he got hit by a sniper from the luxury boxes, and left the game. You want your back-up to be able to give your starter a night off without taking himself out of the game.

He gets dragged off the ice more than any goalie I've seen. I'd prefer a backup that's got some sort of reasonable tolerance to pain.

I don't doubt that Shero will bring in a AAAA guy to battle Curry, but the guy better be prepared to play on the cheap. They won't be signed unless they are close to Curry's projected $650,000 cap hit, me thinks.

I bolded the goalies I feel Shero wouldn't mind giving a look. Most, if not all, can be had for less than $1M.

Just out of curiosity, why not Conklin? He only made 750k last year.

PS_ then again, we could sign him and then cut him as soon as we clinch going to the Finals. I wouldnt be opposed to that
great analogy.

on topic:why not trying to resign Garon instead of going after Legace,Clemmensen,Conklin?

There was a time when Conklin was as unproven as they get. Fleury at one time was as unproven as they get etc. You have to give a player a chance. People act like we must have a great backup goalie from the start. The season is a marathon, not a sprint. We'll have time to adjust if Curry doesn't get the job done. We could do something similar to the Conklin deal and sign a veteran coming off a down year to a low salary, minor league type deal and go to him if Curry struggles.

Also, I disagree that anyone was thinking Conklin could do the job. Most people thought he was done. He had been terrible in Columbus and Buffalo etc. recently. There were also many threads on this very Pens board calling him everything from Conk-Crap to calling him a joke of an NHL goalie. I don't think many believed.
