Personally, I thought his last few years as a Ranger he declined greatly.

Different injuries had taken their toll, his defense wasn't as sharp and he just wasn't quite the same game changing defenseman I remembered. I'm sure some of it was playing on some crappy teams. It seemed like by the time he hit his 30's he was no longer an elite defenseman, but a very good one.

Congrats to Leetch. Great player and a class act. Very well deserved honor. As a Devils fan, I always hated and feared Leetch because he was so damn smooth and so damn good, but I have nothing but respect for the man.

Ironically, there were internal debates as to whether or not Leetch was too small to be a defenseman. They general opinion amongst Ranger brass was that if he didn't play defense, they would convert him to a center.

He could probably still outperform many of the vets and even some of the young kids out there.

Congrats Leetch!

Brian Leetch is a rare type of athlete: an outstanding, highly skilled player who was a joy to watch, but unlike many all-star athletes of today, he is extraordinarily humble, down-to-earth, and always willing to give credit to his teammates ahead of himself.

His reaction to being inducted is typical Leetch: unassuming and appreciative of those who helped him along the way. Courtesy of TSN.ca:

Quote:
''I am humbled and excited by this honour, particularly since for me it is difficult to think of myself as a member of the Hall of Fame,'' Leetch said. "My hockey career has been a long and enjoyable process. I am appreciative of all those who have helped me. From my father as my youth coach, to Mark Messier who helped me out so much -- both on and off the ice surface."
"Class" is a term that gets thrown around a lot here, but Leetchie is really the epitome of a class act. I hope he realizes how much Rangers fans adore and respect him. Congrats, Brian, and thank you for a fabulous career.

I haven't been on this site in a while...but the news of Leetch being voted to the Hall of Fame has prompted my return hahahah. One of my top 3 favorite players of all time.

I heard him on 1050 ESPN after work, he was describing his favorite moments through the entire 1994 playoffs...man, I could see every moment he talked about, vividly and colorfully. As you know, Leetch is not the most lively talker, he's very cut and dry, to the point, stoic... But you could just hear the gratitude and joy in his voice and how much he appreciated the nomination and the experience of what happened in 94. For someone to envision not only the moments of which he spoke but the emotions tied to them shows how much hockey as meant for him and definitely makes it sound like he is no where done with the game. No one can be certain what kind of coach/gm/scout/etc Brian would be or how much success he will have, but I am not afraid to say I hope he is part of the NYR family again, sometime in the near future.

#2, Brian Leetch. One of the all time greats, and one of my favorite players forever. Cheers.

This news made my day. Congratulations Leetchie! Completely well-deserved.

Also, congrats to Stevie Y (another one of my all-time favorites), Luc and Hully. I had a feeling Leetch would make it first ballot and I'm glad to see him get the recognition he deserves.

And don't forget the Conn Smythe for Playoff MVP!!!

Congrats to Leetch, and very well deserved. He is, and always will be my #1 favorite athlete of all time. Thanks in part to being younger and more enthusiastic at the time (in college), I know that '94 will never be exceed in my heart.

Lets just hope that doesn't mean it won't be repeated in my lifetime

classy guy. Consummate professional. You can debate where his play as a defenseman puts him within the greats of All-Time, but you can't debate the person he was and what he meant to this organization. I'm still waiting for a Leetch to join the Rangers, and not just the player, although I do miss a defenseman being able to carry the puck from one end to the other and do something, as well as I miss watching a defenseman who knows how to play the point. But I digress, which is hard to do sometimes. Congrats to him!

Grats to one of the best American Born players ever! He and Kovalev were my two favorites, they could do things with the puck others on the team couldn't.

A very very well deserved honor.

Yes.

Like Joe DiMaggio, he was an all-time great for whom the end seemed to come rather quickly.

Doesn't make him any less great, but it is an approriate follow-up to earlier comments about how we never got to see him in the playoffs after he was 29, how much life the bad teams may have taken out of him and how he is actually the youngest of this HOF class.

It's not like I said he stole candy from babies and kicked puppies in his spare time.
