Also is 35 the age that is set in regards to veteran contracts counting against the cap for the duration of the deal regardless if the player retires?

And is it 35 as of a certain date or as of the day you sign the extension?

The answer is....both....depending on the circumstances....

If a player is on a long-term contract (2 or more years) the team cannot begin negotiating an extension until July 1st of the last year of the contract.

But

If a player is signed to a 1-year deal a contract extension cannot be negotiated until January 1st. This is to prevent a GM from signing a player to 2 simultaneous contracts with different cap hits (i.e. 1 year deal at $2 million and a 5 year extension at $5 million/year).

I hope that answers your question.

The wording in the CBA says....

"As of June 30 prior to the league year in which the SPC is to be effective".

So basically any UFA/RFA that turns 35 before July 1st will be subject to this rule.
