Oh, they can?

Heatley ($7.5m) + Lee ($1.25m) = $8.75m
Smyth ($6.25m) + Wolski ($2.8m) = $9.05m

Cap savings of a whopping $300,000

Colorado is not in a position to make this deal, or any deal for Heatley. If Smyth or Wolski are dealt this offseason it will either be to free up salary (a lot more than the paltry amount that your proposal does) or to acquire a goaltender. This proposal addresses neither concern. And when rebuilding, it's not very wise to trade down in a draft like this one.

So, no thank you.

In terms of straight up value perhaps... but it's the wrong path for the franchise to take. Heatley might make the team good enough to be a playoff bubble team next year and in the coming years, but to get back to perennial Stanley Cup contention the Avs would be better off keeping their #3 pick, going young, and rebuilding their core through the draft over the next couple of years at least.

While pretty even trade, I don't see this deal working.

I don't know about Ottawa, but I think Colorado is pretty committed to the re-build and plus I don't know if Heatley would want to come to a team which is re-building.

This is definitely a fair offer.

However, the Avs are far from contention, and really need the 1st rounder and Wolski.

Heatley laughs and uses his NTC in a second.

i honnestly think there's to much going to Calorado, simply look at the age and the contracts.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm... I like this.

They get a replacement for Sakic and still get a top pick.

And Ottawa gets a few good players and a top 5 pick, then they have to get rid of Spezza.

Not a big fan of this trade. Wolski is better than Lee, Duchene is way better than anyone down at #3. Heatley is better than Smyth for sure, but we're rebuilding. Statsny, Duchene, Wolski down the middle should carry us for years, and Smyth is an important winger for us. Not to mention that I honestly am convinced from reports that Sakic is coming back for one more season. We really don't need Heatley too much, and it would upset the rebuild which should be in full blossom by 2010-2011

this. no from CO. but not a bad proposal value wise.

Exactly, it lines up values well but ignores Colorado's actual needs.

I hope the Avs don't do this. Maybe if they were a contender, but they are not. They need a goalie and a better defense before they can afford to trade away their assets for established talent. Value is pretty even, but that doesn't make it practical right now.

I hope the Avs keep the 3rd and deal Wolski for a need.

Yeah there is a very slim chance one of those guys could even be close to as good as Heatley!

Heatley for Wolski and 3rd overall is good enough, imo.

I agree. Keep it simple. Also I've noticed any trade that mentions Smyth never seems to work.

Doesn't make sense for the Avs. We need to rebuild around Wolski and Duchene(presumably), not trade them away for a winger who is already in his prime who makes 7.5 million.

If I were an Avs fan, I wouldn't do this at all.
hahaha, let alone Smyth being 34 years old and overpaid. Even in is prime he hasn't been a superstar. Is Holmstrom better than Heatley too?

And no, 23 year old 40 pts scorer Wolski is not better than Lee.

Wolski has more points than Lee has games played. Wolski is a year older than Lee, big deal.

Wolski>Lee

This is just a horrid deal for the Avalanche, it'd ruin our rebuilding plan completely.
Yep, imploded all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in 07. Heatley seems to be one of the quieter guys in Ottawa. I don't envision him being a rah rah guy, but I don't see him as someone bringing a dressing room down either.

And your franchise center you talked about, he's a playmaker right? Ya you definitely don't want to surround those types with guys who can finish to the tune of 50 goals.

I think the deal is pretty fair from an outside opinion.

This proposal is about 4 years late, Colorado is not a contender and we should not trade youth for superstars.

There's a salary cap in place, something everyone so kindly overlooks, happy to attribute reluctance or outright denial to an over-emphasis on draft picks. Of course. In this case we're in a bad position to do the trade. Not that it's bad value, etc., but Colorado is rebuilding.
