Here's what I would think about doing.

Negotiated Contracts for next year:
NHL Level Players
26 Josh Gorges (LD) (UFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role 5/6 LD
41 Jaroslav Halak (G) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role Back-Up Goalie
44 Roman Hamrlik (LD) (UFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role 3/4 LD
46 Andrei Kostitsyn (RW/LW) (RFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role Top 1-6 Winger
74 Sergei Kostitsyn (LW/RW) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role 4-9 Winger
40 Maxim Lapierre (C) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role 3/4 Centerman
17 Georges Laraque (RW) (UFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role: 4th Line RW'er
79 Andrei Markov (LD) (UFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role Top Pairing LD
15 Glen Metropolit (C) (UFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role Utility/4th line center
31 Carey Price (G) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role Starting Goaltender
03 Ryan O'Byrne (RD) (RFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role 4-6 RD
So this is what is for certain RIGHT NOW

XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
XXXX-XXXX-A. Kostitsyn
S. Kostitsyn -Lapierre-XXXX
XXXX-XXXX-Laraque
SP:Metropolit

Markov -XXXX
Hamrlik -XXXX
Gorges -O'Byrne
SP:XXXX

Price
Halak

This equates to 21.91 Million as a cap hit.
w/ 12 players to spend it on.

Now the minor leaguers w/ contracts through to next year:
AHL Players Negotiated contracts
67 Max Pacioretty (LW) (RFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role Top 1-6 LW Ready: 09/10?
-- Matt Carle (RD) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role top 4 RD Ready: 2010?
-- David Desharnais (C) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role AHL Center Ready: Now
-- Cedrick Desjardins (G) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role Back up Goalie Ready: 2009?
-- Ben Maxwell (C) (RFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role Top 9 Centerman Ready: 2010?
-- Robert Mayer (G) (RFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role Back up Goal Ready: 2011?
-- Ryan Russell (C) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role AHL Center Ready: Now
-- Brock Trotter (C) (RFA after 09/10) Anticipated Role AHL Center Ready: Now
-- Pavel Valentenko (LD) (RFA after 09/10) Suspended until further notice
-- Yannick Weber (RD) (RFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role 4/6 RD Ready: 09/10?
-- Ryan White (C) (RFA after 10/11) Anticipated Role 6-12 Centerman Ready: 2010?
-- Olivier Fortier (C) (RFA after 11/12) Anticipated Role 6-12 Centerman Ready: 2011?
-- Andrew Conboy (LW) (RFA after 11/12) Anticipated Role 6-12 LW Ready: 2012?

Now Im going to sort out the players based upon my view of their realistic chances of going anywhere anytime soon.
Near NHL'ers
Pacioretty, Carle, Maxwell & Weber have all been with the big club for at least a game so far in their NHL careers.
Max Pac is likely to make an impact somewhat soon based upon what he has shown so far. He could be a viable option as a winger as soon as next year.
Matt Carle, Had IMO a subpar season with Hamilton. If he wants to be here as soon as next year, he's gotta step it up, and give us something we dont have. He's in the AHL to start next year IMO.
Ben Maxwell IMO will need another year of AHL seasoning, with maybe a tour her eand there next year.
Yannick Weber gives us a player who can play RD, & had a solid season in the A. He could battle for a spot as soon as next year. He's gotta win the battle though. We Could be seeing him soon.

XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
Pacioretty-Maxwell-XXXX
XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

XXXX-XXXX
XXXX-Weber
XXXX-Carle

XXXX
XXXX

Desharnais, Desjardins, Mayer, Russell, Trotter, Valentenko (Unknown if he'll return), White, Fortier, Conboy are all guys who IMO will be seasoned some more. They will have to impress to garner recognition to deserve a call up. Won't say for these guys it cant be done, they wont be my key calibre guys yet...

GUYS WHO HAVE CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS

NHL UFA's
51 Francis Bouillon (LD) $1.875 -- 5/6 Util. LD. Unsigned
71 Patrice Brisebois (RD) $750K -- 4/6 Util. RD Decide in Training Camp/Retires
25 Mathieu Dandenault (Util) $1.75 -- Util. RD/RW Unsigned
11 Saku Koivu (C) $4.75 -- Top 9 Center Sign 4 year descending contract, NTC
08 Mike Komisarek (RD) $1.90 -- Top 4 RD Sign to 4-5 yr contract
06 Tom Kostopolous (RW) $900K -- 6-12 RW'er Unsigned
27 Alex Kovalev (RW) $4.50 -- Top 6 RW'er Sign 4 year descending contract NTC-2yrs.
20 Robert Lang (C) $4.00 -- Top 9 Center Possibility of signing. Short term
24 Mathieu Schneider (LD/RD) $5.750 -- 4/6 RD Short term, lower $$ deal no ^ $3.25 per
13 Alex Tanguay (LW) $5.250 -- Top 6 LW 3 yr, no ^ $4.75

Goodbye to: Bouillon, Dandenault, Kostopolous
Brisebois, for his price of $750 K, is still a useful utility d-man. If we're short, I say a 1 year deal could be offered, at this point, I will say he's gone as well.

Negotiations should be had with: Koivu, Komisarek, Kovalev, Lang, Schneider, Tanguay

Koivu: I'd offer a 4 year deal (NTC), descending from around the $4.25 million mark.
Komisarek: 4-5 year term contract, hovering around $3.50 - $4.50 million mark
Kovalev: I'd offer 4 year deal (NTC - 2yr), descending from the $4.50 million mark
Lang: The tough call... Injury & age makes me question..Offer 1-2 year,$2.0 million +Bonus
Schneider: Age is a factor. Short term, 1-2 years, $3.5-$4.0 million mark
Tanguay: Injuries is a factor. 4 year deal, $4.50 mark.

Priority (chances of wanting to go over my mark):
(1) 08 Mike Komisarek
(2) 11 Saku Koivu
(3) 13 Alex Tanguay
(4) 27 Alex Kovalev
(5) 24 Mathieu Schneider
(6) 20 Robert Lang

AHL UFA's
Craig Anderson (RD), Marc Denis (G), Ryan Flinn (LW), Mike Glumac (RW), Alex Henry (LD), Doug Janik (LD), TJ Kemp(LD), Yanick Lehoux (C),
Out of this list, I'd offer a 2-way to Denis, Flinn, & Glumac.

Denis I'd have little bargain for, the other 2 could go... either way. Denis, mainly to due to the fact that Halak is RFA, & it might be a good time to make a trade... We have someone already ready for a back up role, and could be a very good mentor to Price.

NHL RFAs
36 Matt D'agostini $508K -- 3/4 Line RW sign 2 year, 1 way deal 750K
21 Chris Higgins $1.90 -- Top 9 LW'er Sign 3 year $2.30 deal
84 Guillaume Latendresse $850K -- 4-9 winger Sign 1 year deal
14 Tomas Plekanec $1.80 -- Top 9 Center Sign 3 year, $2.75
28 Kyle Chipchura $860K -- 6-12 Center Sign 3 yr, 1 way deal 600k
70 Gregory Stewart $500K -- 3/4 Line LW'er Sign to terms, 2-way

AHL RFA's
Shawn Belle (D), Loic Lacasse (G), Olivier Latendresse (C),

Possibly drop Lacasse, & O. Latendresse.

Definitive offer to Shawn Belle, with promise for honest shot @ club.

Lose: Lacasse, O.Latendresse

By looking at what we have,
Gainey should realize it will be enough of a challenge to keep our own UFA's. This is not a great year for the UFA market, and many of our guys are top end targets. One big free agent I'd be after is Beauchemin to return.

Primary need is a top end center. I dont care how, or who... that is our need. Good value to go the other way.

Here are some RFA's i'd like to see Gainey target, either via trade or via offersheet...

fwd's:
Clowe (SJS)
Ruutu (Car)
Callahan (NYR)
Brouwer (Chi)

D's:
Johnson (LAK)
O'Brien (VAN)
Morrisson (Wash)

the UFA crop this year is pretty pathetic as far as quality players with some grit, so if we are going to make any headway in that department, RFA's might be the only option, and with the roster/cap space that we will have, we certainly can afford to be a little balsy on that front.

another guy I'd also consider is Brule... not sure how high the Oilers are on him at this point, but with the young guys they already have up the middle (gagner, cogliano, brodzniak, + horcoff signed long term) it's hard to see where he'll be able to fit in.
He may never live up to the potential, but he may also turn into a late bloomer, NHL wise, and he certainly plays with the kind of intensity that we could sorely use upfront, assuming his game ever made it up to NHL standards.

Disclaimer: This is not what I think will happen it is what I would try to do. Also, I know all the players I signed might not accept the offers (I’m sure everyone will say the offers are too low) and I have no clue if the Lightning and Canucks would accept those trades (I’m sure everyone will say I didn’t offer enough). This is just what I would try to do. I am attempting to make the team a bigger, stronger, grittier team that is hard to play against. All the lines have good size. The top two lines would be counted on for offence. The 3rd line can be physical, good defensively, and put some goals on the board. The 4th line is gritty. I listed other UFA’s and RFA’s that are of interest to me if I couldn’t sign the players I said I did or if we had to involve more players in trades (ie. Higgins). Also, who knows what the cap will do so maybe none of this will work anyways, ha. Oh yeah, one of the most important things is I added is another right-handed shot. When we lost Lang that lack of a right-handed shot on the PP hurt us bad. Bernier and Lang are right-handed shots and can play on the PP. Weber is the right-handed point shot.

Tanguay (5.25)...........Lecavalier (7.73)....Bernier (2.625)
Pacioretty (0.875).......Lang (2.5).............Kovalev (4.0)
Higgins (2.0)...............Lapierre (0.688).....Latendresse (1.333)
Stewart (0.650)..........Metropolit (1.0)......Laraque (1.5)

FORWARDS = $30.151 million

Markov (5.75)............Komisarek (4.5)
Bouwmeester (5.57)...O’Byrne (0.942)
O’Brien (1.5)..............Weber (0.875)

DEFENCE = $19.137 million

Price (2.2)
Halak (0.775)

GOALIES = $2.975 million

TOTAL = $52.263 million

Unrestricted Free Agent Signings
Bouwmeester – 7 years at 7.0, 6.0, 6.0, 5.0, 5.0, 5.0, 5.0 = $39 million at $5.57 million/year
Tanguay – 4 years at 5.5, 5.5, 5.0, 5.0 = $21 million at $5.25 million/year
Komisarek – 4 years at 4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5 = $18 million at $4.5 million/year
Kovalev – 2 years at $4.0 = $9.0 million at $4.0 million/year
Lang – 1 year at 2.5 = $2.5 million at $2.5 million/year

Restricted Free Agent Signings
Bernier – 3 years at 2.625, 2.625, 2.625 = $7.875 million at $2.625 million/year
Latendresse – 3 years at 1.0, 1.5, 1.5 = $4.0 million at $1.333 million/year
Higgins – 2 years at 2.0, 2.0 = $4.0 million at $2.0 million/year
O’Brien – 2 years at 1.5, 1.5 = $3 million at $1.5 million/year
Stewart – 2 years at 0.650, 0.650 = $1.3 million at $0.650 million/year

Did not re-sign
Koivu, Kostopolous, Dandenault, Bouillon, Brisebois

Other UFA’s of interest
Travis Moen, Martin Havlat, Marian Hossa, Marian Gaborik, Ian Laperriere, Kurtis Foster, Francois Beauchemin, Olaf Kolzig, Brian Boucher, Saku Koivu, Mathieu Dandenault, Tom Kostopolous, Francis Bouillon, Chris Neil, Nick Boynton, Mathieu Schneider, Stephane Yelle, Dwayne Roloson

Other RFA’s of interest
Ryan Clowe, Phil Kessel, Kris Versteeg, Drew Stafford, Cam Barker, Ben Eager, Dave Bolland, Jack Johnson, Brandon Dubinsky, Ryan Callahan, Kyle Brodziak, Matt D’Agostini

Trades

Lightning
Lecavalier – Plekanec, A.Kostitsyn, S.Kostitsyn, Gorges, picks, Lightning draft Hedman with 2nd overall pick

Canucks
Bernier, O’Brien – Chipchura, Hamrlik (who knows if they want Hamrlik but they are losing Ohlund)

Other Stuff

I had tried to make a contract for Gaborik in place of Kovalev but I couldn’t make one that I thought he would accept and fit it under the cap. Also, if we couldn’t sign Komisarek for a reasonable price I would probably go after Nick Boynton or another defenseman like that.

I tried to make a trade for Jordan Staal, so the second line would have been Pacioretty Staal Gaborik but I couldn’t find anything that would be enough to get it done.

I re-signed Lang instead of Koivu because with the addition of Lecavalier he would be the leader. Lang replaces Koivu as 2nd line center because Lang is a very smart player who uses his size effectively.

I re-signed Kovalev because I think he plays good when everyone else is trying. If no one else is putting in the effort he stops trying too.

Probably re-sign Dandenault and D'Agostini as well somewhere in there.

Also, do whatever you can to get Alexei Yemelin the hell over to North America. And do not draft Euro’s in the earlier rounds, it is a waste of a pick because you do not know if the player will ever come to North America no matter what they say unless you are drafting top 5 overall. Draft North Americans who dreamed of playing for the Stanley Cup and not a gold medal at the Olympics. Go for a steal in the 5th, 6th, or 7th round with some random Euro picks if they want ala Markov, Datsyuk, Halak, etc.

I am quite sure your Vinny deal will never go through. Kovalev for 2 years @ 9 million is 4.5 a year not 4. We need a veteran goalie with Price to develop him. Should have done it this year. Halak will fetch us another first rounder though. Washington be a good fit, Flyers also, Wings too, maybe even Avs.

My lineup for next year would like quite different than yours, but some similaries

I now seriously doubt Lecavalier will join the habs since Gainey's press conference, although having him and st-louis would have been great

Not sure what our team will look like but we do need improvement in our top two lines ...

I think that with Higgins, Lapierre, Latendresse we have What is needed for a very good third line. I also think that between Metropolit, Stewart and Laraque we should also be set on the forth line for next year. What to do with the top two lines is a good question though ...

Interesting RFAs: Clowe, Dubinsky, Zajac, Kreijci, Kessel, Barker, J.Johnson
Interesting UFA: Bowmeester, Beauchemin, Hossa, Havlat, Gaborik
Center that could be obtained via trade: One of (Marleau, Thornton, Lecavalier, Briere, Gagne, Jokinen)

Trade 1: S.Kostitsyn, T.Plekanek, A.Kostsitsyn, MacDonagh, 1st round in 2010 to TB for Lecavalier.

Offer Sheet: Dubinsky (4.5M) 5y; Clowe (4M) 5Y;

If everything was perfect and going my way....

Tanguay(4M), Lecavalier(8M), Latendresse(1M)
C.Higgins(2.5), Dubinsky(4.5M); Clowe(4M)
Pacioretty(1M), Lapierre(1M), Daggostini(1M)
Stuart(1M), Metropolit (1M), Laraque (1.5)
Total Forwards 30.5M

Markov (5M) ----- Beauchemin (3M)
Hammerlik (4.5M) -- Schneider (2M)
Georges (1M) --- Obyrne(1M)

Total Defence: 16.5M
Price(1M), Halak(1M)
Total 49M

Habs can consider offer sheet but it's impossible to realize more than 1 offer sheet at least not those mentioned(one of 4m$+ and one below 1.5m$ is possible tough).

For offer sheet the compensation are drafts picks but they have to be
1- your own draft picks
2- for the next draft (in this case 2010)
and the compensation in this case for each player:
1st, 2nd , 3rd each...

offer sheet are a good way to steal talent but if it's not a top talent it's kinda useless ...

This is a longshot, but it could be a pretty awesome steal if the Habs went and sent an offer sheet to Enver Lisin. Apparently, Gretzky and the Coyotes are not too pleased with him, much to many fans' dismay:

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=625918

It's very possible he simply packs it up and goes to the KHL, but maybe he'd be willing to give it another shot with an NHL team interested in him. When I've seen him play, he's done some good things, and he's one of the fastest players in the league. Speed like that is impossible to teach, and he's young and lacks confidence, seems like the perfect candidate to break out in a new scenario, and could be relatively cheap.

YEAH!

Wow, some of these posts at the start of last year are outrageous. Goes to show how fickle alot of you guys on here really are.

Kovalev 4 Mil
Komisarek 5 m
Tanguay 5.25 m
Koivu 3 m
Higgins 2.5 m
pleks 2 m
chip 1m
lats 1.5 m

Man the fans on this site are up and down. Most of the posters on here want kovalev's head, (he had 65 points on a ****** PP team). I don't understand why the fans here don't give any slack to the players.

1- your own draft picks
2- for the next draft (in this case 2010)
and the compensation in this case for each player:
1st, 2nd , 3rd each...

offer sheet are a good way to steal talent but if it's not a top talent it's kinda useless ...
And since we don't have our own 2nd round pick this year, we can only offer up to 4M for a RFA this summer...

2,615,624 - 3,923,434 ..... 1st and 3rd (these were the numbers for 08-09 and if the cap goes down, the bracket should also go down)

How about this to shore up the D

Francois Beauchemin - 3yrs 3.75 mil per
Kurtis Foster - 2yrs 1.75 mil per

If these scenerios are possible I would rather have
both or these players (for the same price) then only Komi.

Foster is a big guy at 6'-5" 220lbs, could make a strong
3rd pairing with Gorges.

Beauchemin is a pretty solid all around d-man and could
work well with Markov.

Re-Sign Mathieu Schneider - 1yr 1.5 mil with some bonuses
He would be the #7 D-man

For the last spot I would let Subban and Weber fight it out
in training camp.

Markov - Beauchemin
Hamrlik - Subban/Weber
Foster - Gorges
Schneider

I wouldn't mind seeing Hamrlik traded, I like him just not
his cap hit.

And to get a little crazy here how about trying this as first
option on July 1st

Jay Bouwmeester - 11yrs 63.25 mil, cap hit = 5.75 mil per

Age - Salary
26 - 10
27 - 10
28 - 10
29 - 8
30 - 6.5
31 - 5
32 - 5
33 - 4
34 - 2.25
35 - 1.5
36 - 1

It was just a crazy thought, I don't assume he would accept it.

Lang's injury would have a lot to do with him being resigned. The achilles tendon injury can lead to a bunch of other issues. It caused Selanne to have knee problems until the lockout when he was able to get his knee fixed. At Lang's age of 39 when he comes back in September he probably has lost a step or two and he was already not the fastest player out there.

Lang would be a decision made by Gainey at training camp. I would assume he would offer Lang a tryout contract at that time.

If I was the GM of the Habs, both those D-men would be high on my list to sign as UFA's. Foster also has a bullet shot from the point. The question is how he is as recovered from the broken leg. He did get 6 points in 10 games last year though. If Komisarek really wants and can get 4.5m or more from a team then the signing of Foster and Beauchemin at the CAP HIT suggested would be ideal.

Replace 1 player with 2 players, that isn't that bad.

I don't believe in trades that are illusory, and have doubts about landing Vinnie, but O'Brien would bring something that the team needs. A starting defender who is hard as nails and will stick up for his team-mates, which the team lacks since Souray left.

Although this team is also centerman-challenged somewhat. There are options out there that are more attainable than Vinnie and would bring punch to the line-up.

My thoughts...

Everyone makes these outrageous proposals etc. with not understanding that the signings you make today will effect you for years to come. Yes you can sign x player for 6 million for 8 yrs etc....then when it comes to signing your own RFA's you will have no cap space left. Can't only look at this season, have look beyond....which I think Gainey is really good at. Anyway, you look at a team like the Flyers..they are in trouble. They have no cap space and the cap is going down. How can they sign a goalie? They are dying to get rid of Briere...can't do it..no one will take them off there hands. Have to remember, the cap is going down...within 2-3 yrs it can be as low as $49 million.

Will Tanguay sign now?

Now that he knows who the coach is, does anybody think it's only a matter of days until Bob announces the new contract. We need him badly next season. He's not an impact forward but he's the kind of player that makes his line and linemates better. I would hate the fact that we gave up on a 1st round pick for 1 season.

I'm pretty sure he will sign, Martin is experience, to way play and system, three things Tangs seem fit to be part of

I don't see how he wouldn't. Martin will help the team and will be good with the youngs. The team can only be better with him and it would be benefic for our team.

Who cares honestly, if Tanguay is not going to sign because of a coach, that means he thinks he's bigger than the team and I'd rather not have a player like that.
