The coverage this year is terrible.

No video? No interviews?

We get a quick blurb and that's it.

How did the runs go? How did everyone else do in the skating laps? What else went on?

Great, Gilroy did well, who else did?

The Rangers web team is too busy with that ridiculous "Subscriber Central" site, thinking it'll somehow convince subscribers to re-up.

Kreider said in his interview that he is definitely going to Boston College in the fall...that clears any questions we might have about that up.

Both videos were just skating (Kreider's has some of Bourque skating). Although he isn't running the camp I think it's clear what kind of players Torts wants on his team. Grachev and Kreider both looked gassed; Kreider especially had shortened his stride and was nearly upright. Clearly he hasn't skated in a while and his conditioning was not up to par - makes you wonder what a rigorous NCAA conditioning program will do for his development...exciting.

Agreed, but with conditioning he should be powering through that.

hey, Torts himself even said that this was kind of unfair to these kids who haven't had time to prepare for this kind of camp

Prospect Video Review

You guys are classic. The video of these guys skating is either a long stride warm up or cool down. Nobody looks gassed. If these were the 15 lap sprints, I am sure you would see a lot more effort on the video. I would also bet that the Kreider kid is in unbelievable shape at this point. I read somewhere that he came in a little under his usual weight for the combine because he played lacrosse all spring. There is an interview with his lacrosse coach where the guy admits that he kept him on the field for 80% of the game and their clearing play was to get the ball to Kreider and let him run it the length of the field.

I would like to see more video though....heard they scrimmaged today.

Forget to post this a couple days ago....while working I was listening to the radio at around 1230 at night and they took a female caller, she said she was just coming back from White Plains at the bars and get this, she said she was hanging out with "The New York Rangers new recruits" (I guess she meant rookies)....this was on Monday night.

Nice to see our kids drinking the night away during the Development Camp

They skated 40+ laps continuously... ANYONE would be gassed.

Kreider is in very good shape.

The video was obviously in the later laps.

Grachev's video could have been at about lap 20.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to judge a player by that.

I don't disagree. Still a really awkward clip of Kreider to show though.

It definitely was. I agree.

The coverage hasn't been good at all. I was hoping to see drills both with pucks and without.

We will have a development camp story at the end of the week. There is not enough going on for me to write something up every day (and today I was not there). So look for a story either Saturday or Sunday.

Kreider just finished up lacrosse season. Lacrosse conditioning is right up there with hockey, I'm sure he's in pretty good shape.

Based on this week, it's looking like the Rangers had a good draft in 2008. Defenseman Michael Del Zotto (20th overall), center Derek Stepan (51st), left wing Evgeny Grachev (75th) and defenseman Tomas Kundratek have all stood out at different times for different reasons. Del Zotto displays that same poise that marks Marc Staal's game, though he needs to manage the puck better at times. That, no doubt, will come with age/experience. Stepan showed good anticipation in both the offensive and defensive zones. Grachev is just a fluid skater/shooter with obvious goal-scoring instincts. At the end of the session, with a group of players including this year's picks Chris Kreider and Ryan Bourque taking penalty shots on Cornell goalie Ben Scrivens, all but Grachev tried to impress with dipsy-does and other unnecessary moves. Grachev just skated in - repeatedly - and simply flicked puck after puck past Scrivens. Kundratek, paired the last two days with Del Zotto, showed good offensive instincts and an ability to move the puck, plus a hard shot. In one drill, though, Stepan beat Kundratek with a quick move then roofed a goal off the goalie's mask.

Also on my like list: Matt Gilroy (though that's hard to judge since the soon-to-be-25-year-old is so much more mature than the others) and Finnish defenseman Ilkka Heikkinen, who will be 25 in November and would seem likely to start the season at Hartford (AHL). Heikkinen has a hard blast from the point and a quick wrist shot.
