I love how everyone gives Burke **** for "taking this to the media"

He was asked an unrehearesed question during a fast paced interview and said he thinks the Isles are leaning towards a forward. He then said it's either Tavares or Duchene but he would lean towards Duchene if he had to guess.

Precisely. Brian Burke gets far too much criticism for giving his honest opinion.

nono, he's got an "agenda"... see, if he says that Duchene is gonna go 1st, it guarantees that it'll happen. GMs are so afraid of him that whatever he says, they'll do... he'll just go down the list of teams, say that none of them want Tavares, and then grab him with our 7th rounder

Entirely off topic, but this is the most active thread, and I'm hoping for a quick reply. Does anyone know if there will be a text alert service available that will send updated results to a cell phone on the draft? I'm likely going to be out of town for a portion of day two and would like to see how some of it plays out.

Burke was asked by Landsberg "Who do you think they'll take?"

Burke replied "I THINK it'll be Matt Duschene."

There is no debate, Tavares will be #1 , Hedman #2 .
Duchene is more media hype than anything else.

Darren Dreger of TSN has a Twitter account you can follow. He's already Tweeting from the draft and will be providing updates from the draft floor tonight.

Also, Kevin Allen of USA Today is Tweeting.

Not texting, I know, but if you have a Blackberry or iPhone, you can get a Twitter app for it.

I wonder how many of these people hyping Duchene over Tavares are aware that Duchene had back problems as a 15-year-old. Hasn't been a problem in the last two seasons, but any team taking him No. 1 better do their homework on that.

Let's be fair to the man here...After being the young phenom for three years that everyone said would be first overall, and breaking Gretzky's rookie goal record, what could he have done to solidify his status? Our standards for him were set really high; there wasn't much he could do to impress us.

He has dropped his scoring pace considerably since that record breaker, but has rounded his game out some more and shown that he can compete against the best.
Everyone said he didn't step it up in the playoffs with the Knights; he always seemed kind of secondary. For John Tavares standards of course.
On Oshawa, he was the team, the whole team nothing but the team so help him God.
On the Knights, he was around other talented players who had been part of an already good London squad, so I think it was a matter of finding his comfort and finding his place on the team. He was used to being the man, not just the addition.

So what could he have done to impress us? Not too much.
After four years of JT-first overall, there was no way further up, and a mob of people who scoured him for weakness.
Nevertheless, he scored over a goal a game, ppg in the playoffs and broke the all time OHL goal record, and managed over a goal a game, and 15 points in 6 at the WJC against the best young players in the world. Also got best forward and Most Valuable Player overall.

But that's still not THAT good for the standards we've set for John Tavares...
This is a fantastic post. I think you've hit the nail on the head. The bar for Tavares was set impossibly high after breaking Gretzky's goal scoring record. Anything after that almost seemed like a disappointment, but I don't think people can overlook the fact that he had a phenomenal career. What he did at such a young age points to him being an exceptional talent. Duchene is very good, but exceptional? No.

On a side note, is it just me or does every draft have one player that is hyped up to be the next Yzerman (or Sakic)? Turris in 07, Stamkos in 08, and now Duchene in 09.

Burke probalby shouldn't be commenting on what other teams are doing. IMO, the most appropriate response to that question would have been "I don't know what Garth Snow is going to do. Perhaps you should talk to him..."

That what 99% of the other GMs in the NHL would have done.

But, that said, I don't really see the great harm in what he said and personally admire Burke as a straight shooter. I also think his capacity to get the media up north fired up is great for hockey.

Billy Jaffe said he thinks the Isles go with Duchene on NHL live.

I don't think there's a snowball's chance that Duchene goes first.

If Snow wants him and he's smart, he will trade down to third overall and take him.

Once again, there is no opportunity to trade down. Tampa wants Hedman, and knows they can get him at 2, and Colorado is happy with whoever falls to three. IF the Isles want Duchene, and I think there is a reasonable chance they do, they have to nab him at #1 overall. End of story.

A lot of sources that I respect, like Jaffe, are reporting that Duchene is the man. So, it is, indeed, quite possible.

don't forget to post the links to when he traded and drafted 2 of the top 3 picks when they were hard to get (Sedins), also how he got Pronger.

I disagree. I don't think Tavares is seen to be on the same level as guys like Crosby, Ovechkin, Malkin. Less questions existed on those guys than did on Tavares. I would say Lecavalier, Thornton, and probably a lot of others were easily as hyped as Tavares as well.
Crosby's probably the only one who received as much positive press as Tavares. The plaudits Tavares got with "exceptional player status" and then after breaking Gretzky's record were overwhelming.

Then everyone started doing their microscope thing.

But Tavares' one minor flaw is like a scratch on a Rolls Royce: a big problem only to someone who's looked too long and too hard for a chink, but something that's easily compensated for by the rest of the package and most likely rectifiable anyways.

Might depend how much media you're reading, what part of the country you live in as well.

And you have to remember to make the distinction between being "highly-touted" by scouts and being "hyped" by Canadian media. They aren't the same thing at all even though some seem to confuse the two.
It's been both.
