Could Redden Be A Habs Blueline Solution?(Rangers to buy out Redden?)

I bumped into this article. Unlikely, but at that price, well worth the price!

"Oh my God, he's lost his fricking mind!"

I heard you out loud, upon reading the title of this piece. And yeah, I had to doublecheck my wiring.

I'll cut straight to the chase - there is a rumour (I know, I know) making the rounds that makes all kinds of sense, that the New York Rangers are about to buy out the remaining four seasons of Wade Redden's contract (32.8 over 5 yrs) signed last summer, that raised just about three eyebrows on every face when it was announced.

Full article...

Redden cannot be a #1 D-man anymore. But I think he can be a top-four guy so I wouldn't be too adverse to signing him to a good value deal.

Caveat emptor, though.

Personally, my belief on Redden is that he has been done for a few years now. Even if he is bought out I dont think he is much of a solution to anything anymore.

i would be pretty comfortable with the top 4 mentioned in the article. And gorges in no slouch either given 3rd pairing responsibilities.

What do you think we'd offer him if he was bought out?

Redden cannot play the game anymore, i thin it was quite obvious after his last season with the Rangers.

I'm thinking around $3-3½M should do it considering that he'd already get some compensation from the Rangers with the buy-out.

I wouldn't be surprised if Martin was interested in getting him here...

Why would we help the Rangers? They were stupid enough to tie up a huge portion of their cap with him, good luck. Same situation as Philly. They both need to live with the situation they've created for themselves.

from my understanding redden became pretty stable after the second half...obvi not stable enough for the money they are paying him but stable according to rags fans (of course those comments might just have been made by them to "gauge" his trade value or defend him)

Well, if he's bought out, 3.5 mill a year at most.

Do yourself a favour and read the article before commenting like this... they're talking about the Rangers buying him out, leaving him as a free agent.

We wouldn't. The scenario is the Rangers buying out Redden and Montreal signing him as an UFA -- for a lot less than he makes now.

Redden did improve visibly once Tortorella stepped in as head coach and can easily be said to be our best or second best defenseman in the seven game series against the caps. Redden is obviously not worth the money he is getting, but he is without a doubt still a serviceable top 4 defenseman.

Most overpaid d-man in the NHL. Let the Rangers keep the albatrosses.

I hope this is a joke. Due to my parents having split allegiances between the Habs and the Rangers, I follow them a bit and he is terrible and not worth the money. Please god, no.

In all seriousness, I'd take Redden at about $3 million as a UFA... definitely an improvement over what we had last year.

I think he should be considered as a backup plan, but the price is very important.

Of course we all want to see a big splash be made but again chances are it won't happen.

The cap hit's a little hefty for the Rangers, and the term is ridiculous... I don't know if they'd really be tempted to do it.

Regardless, I'm not a fan of Redden. Unless the deal was an absolute steal, I'd pass.

He's not complete crap, but the Rangers had to overpay for him to win his services, kind of like Montréal with Hamrlik. Now, Hamrlik is overpaid, but it's not that bad, since he plays well at both ends and is kind of worth most of his money. Redden isn't. And I'd say Campbell's contract is worse than Redden's, but that's me.

Redden is not worth the money. There is a reason why NYR absolutely hate him. He is bad bad bad to the bone. Do not touch. Let him go play in some beer league in Europe.

*shrug*

Redden has Brad Stuart syndrome.

He's a good, solid player, who had a couple nice seasons and is now expected to play in 1/2 role. Just because he is not a 1/2 guy doesn't make him useless. It makes him a 3/4 guy.

If he gets bought out, by all means, bring him in. He'd be a great addition to the team's second pairing.

Now... if it involved taking on that contract? Hells no!
