The Colorado Rockies had a midfielder with the last name of Tavares, so I know there is a Tavares who plays baseball. I don't think it is that big of a deal. Most Americans aren't prospect gurus like we are at HF. This is the first draft I actively followed, and I love all sports!

I will say Colorado is really buzzing with this draft. Most fans are expecting some big big things here!

If the 21% of the people who voted were a perfect cross section of the US (relax, it's not). That would be 64 million people knew who he was.

Only 21% of sports fans on ESPN know who he is? That's a problem.

And whoever the #1 draft pick/prospect is for the 2009 NFL draft. I don't follow football. I'm sure there'd a be correlation between people who got the "Who is Tavares?" and people who got at least three of the four questions wrong. I seriously doubt a lot of people follow all four of the major sports drafts.

Seems like ESPN is trying to make hockey look irrelevant.
Bingo. IMO, Blake Griffin is almost as unrecognizable a name/face to the average American as John Tavares is. Non-issue.

ESPN, at least the website does a very good job covering hockey and has some well-connected journalists/television types contributing (Pierre Lebrun for one).

Seriously, I'm on ESPN all the time. I didn't vote.

It's out of less than 6000 people. A sample size that small you'll find all kinds of crazy sh-tuff.

Yep. 73% of the US said the Coyotes would be better off in Hamilton than Phoenix.

True that. Most people in WNY know him as the NLL's all-time point scorer. That wasn't even one of the choices.

by the way, US Soccer Midfielder is winning the INTERNATIONAL vote, too (38%).

Which is astounding considering:
#1 - Soccer is the world's primary sport, so all soccer fans should know he's not on our soccer team.
#2 - All you Canadians should know who Tavares is.
#3 - All the people in Sweden should know Tavares is going ahead of Hedman
#4 - All the people in Spain should know Ricky Rubio's agent.

Hey ,its all good because if hockey were huge down there it would just mean more expansion.
I'd like a poll of up and coming race car drivers down up here.
To each his own.

I'm not sure why people are commenting on the sample size... It's people who are viewing ESPN, thus sports fan. They could easily have googled it, but they think they know the right answer.

Regardless of numbers that is just shockingly bad.

uh, 5700 is a pretty solid sample size for any poll. keep in mind, too, that there's a serious bias here because these are sports fans--they have a better-than-average knowledge of who Tavares is.

for those comparing to blake griffin, keep in mind that tavares is the most hyped prospect since crosby, while griffin is pretty unspectacular as NBA #1s go. I guarantee that if this poll had been done with, say, Durant 2 years ago, the numbers would have crushed this one.

Not as hockey-less as Wyoming, Montana, or Kentucky - at least the three states you mentioned had teams.

That's all irrelevant.

ESPN is asking "Hey, how many of our loyal readers/viewers know anything about a guy... that WE HAVEN'T TOLD YOU ABOUT?"

Nascar is bumper cars, where 40 guys go around and bang into each other while some southern dude with little education yells "lookee that! They tradin' paint in the corners! Rubbin' is Racin'!"

IndyCar is open wheel racing. If you touch something, your day is done 90% of the time; your car is toast and you can be injured. It takes actual skill to drive at 170-230 mph and not touch anything ever.
