Tyson Barrie? I'm not a fan of that pick.

edit - He is in a great program in Kelowna. I just can't see him being good enough defensively to play in the NHL.

Avalanche select Tyson Barrie from Kelowna. I played against him when he was on the Juan de Fuca Midget AAA team assembled by his father Len Barrie. Good player, but I think he's a bit overrated.

The Elliot pick is a good one but I am not seeing O'Reilly over Roussel, Budish, Werek, etc. I know he is ranked higher by ISS but he has the same knocks as Budish (skating) with a smaller frame and seemingly lower ceiling.

Tyson Barrie

An offensive-minded defenseman, Barrie has turned an average second half of the season into a productive playoff performance. A confident puck carrier, he has been a mainstay on the power play ion both his 16- and 17-year-old seasons. He has had the tremendous good fortune to have been paired with Luke Schenn (TOR) and then Tyler Myers (BUF) in Kelowna during the past two seasons, a fact he has acknowledged when queried about his ability to commit to attacking zone play. Barrie does not possess an overpowering shot, but it is consistently accurate and he has the knack of sifting the puck through traffic. He does not necessarily have to get bigger, but he will have to be stronger to excel in professional hockey. While he reminds WHL onlookers of a right-handed shooting Kris Russell (CBJ), Barrie has yet to make a major impact on the international junior stage.

We should have taken a goalie there. I agree...we're going to miss out.

I really hope that this was done to try and screw over LEN BARRIE by trading his son to him at a later time.

Really don't like this pick.

The sad part is, I bet we can screw them over. They are in love (much like the Avs front office) with faces they know. I bet 90% of the marginal players from Vancouver Island who were drafted are all Tampa Bay property. I doubt he has no interest in his own son.

Seems like a reach but Kelowna is turning into a defender factory so I can see that angle. Scratching my head a little today.

Can't believe Roy or Rajala haven't been taken yet.

My biggest darkhorse, hidden gem steal is SAMI VATANEN, D.

If we can somehow pick up this kid, it will make up for a horrible pick in Barrie.

They went off the board and took Jamie Devane. They probably don't have a little name card for him.

Edit: There it is

Man everyone is passing up on Toni. It has to be for a good reason. He might be one of those "I'll use my 7th rounder on him" picks.

and two picks later the guy I want is gone. I don't get the feeling that Barrie was the smart pick, at best he's going to be trotted out for the PP.

I really think we should take a goaltender. Pasquale or Hackett or somebody.

Although how would that go? "We just fired your uncle. Welcome aboard, Hack!"

I think that's fair value for Barrie, not a reach by any means. Were there players I would rather have at that spot? Yes (like the 2 guys taken after him for instance), but that's right around where you would expect him to go.

He's got mad skillz though and not only competes against bigger competition but EXCELS!!! In 5 years, people will look back and wonder why Rajala was drafted so late, I guarantee it.
