I think the most important thing is to get somebody with a sound, model game. Somebody for Hedman to look at and try to imitate and or be there to help him on the fly and also be good enough to help make up for any mistakes Hedman will make.

I figure they spend somewhere between 3 and 6 million on defense upgrade(s).
Ideally get 2 defensemen.
Prioritize getting a Righty with their first move in this direction, use whats left on another option.

Narrowing the list by right hand shots first leaves a pretty narrow spectrum of whats available. Many are older options, who although they might be good for Hedmans development, few seem to drastically improve the unit as a whole. At least not as much as some of the other 'splashier' UFAs coveted this offseason.

In no particular order, Right point men available this offseason as UFAs are (last years cap hit in parentheses);

Aucoin (4m)
Foster (1.025)
Komisarek (1.9)
Morris (3.95)
Boucher (2.5)
Blake (5)
Chelios (.750)
Boynton (2.95)
Eminger (1.2)
Zubov (5.35)
Warrener (2.35)
Brisebois (1.5)
Montador (.8)

RFA options - oddly both from SE teams include;
Babchuk (1)
Jurcina (.912)

I think one of the above will be the first acqusition. Barring Komisarek who I think would look nice paired up with Mez, I almost think Chelios is the next best option.3 reasons for that, 1. low cost, low risk 2. wealth of experience focused on sound tough defense 3. leaves time in the season for other young D in the system to get chances to play.

Financial limits would then determine how big a fish they could splurge on with the rest. There are plenty of (more) attractive options of all shapes, sizes, and styles when including Left side D into the mix. Most of the desirable ones have been mentioned already, and I'd be thrilled if they manage to land just one that is significant in what they bring to next years squad.

Although I haven't done any window shopping, a deal that saw Vrbata or Prospal heading out to fill one of the above is also a reasonable possibility, especially if it re-opens some cash to better address the other Defense spot and/or the top 6 wing vacancy created by either.

Hedman's defense partner in Modo is Mattias Timander who played over 400 nhl games with various teams, I wouldn't be opposed to offer him the job as a 7th defenseman to basically be Hedman's guide and unofficial assistant coach. Though I doubt he wants to leave Modo but maybe a year in the NHL and to stay with Hedman would help his decision.

I would love for us to bring Boynton in, hopefully he enjoys Florida and would be willing to come to Tampa, because I think he would be an excellent pickup for this team.

Ranger-Meszaros
Hedman-Boynton
Smaby-Lashoff
-Krajicek

No Chelios, No Komisarek.

Komisarek as a defensive role model is kind of terrifying.

Agreed! Chelios isn't able to contribute much anymore and Komisarek isn't that good, at all.

What about Cory Sarich? He could be a trade possibility. He takes a lot of penalties though...

hasn't McKee been injured a significant amount of time? we don't need a guy who can't stay healthy as our veteran D...anybody have any thoughts on Morris? he's about the only right shooting D who can stay healthy and play in all situations. I would love to get Zubov, if I knew he would play at least 70 games...Eminger isn't the best choice, but if he's available, he'll work.

This will be interesting....all logic would point to Hedman being paired with Ohlund, but what about Tocchet saying that they were going to ease Hedman in and not overwork him? That tells me they dont plan on Hedman playing top line minutes. So does that mean Ohlund wont be playing top line minutes? Or will they pair Ohlund with somebody else?

Ohlund and Hedman should be a pretty solid pairing next season, maybe Hedman can teach Ohlund a thing or two

in all seriousness though, congrats on drafting VH and signing Mattias Ohlund you're defensive problems are that much closer to being solved.

To start the season:

Regular strength: Paul Ranger
Power Play: Mattias Ohlund

As Hedman proves his ability, he can eventually play with Ohlund at regular strength.

Yeah, I agree, on the power play Victor needs to be paired with Ohlund unless we see a comeback of offensive production of Mr. Meszaros.

I really think we're going to ease Hedman in at first. I don't expect him to get more than 13-15 mins the first 20+ games. Hedman/Ranger is possible.

Talking about the PP, you think we will go with the same top PP unit? As that seemed to be clicking at an insane pace at the end of the season, using the 4 F 1 D. Then again who goes on the 2nd unit, as I mean R2 cant even hit one timer

That might be the time to use Hedman-Ohlund together.

As for forwards, we'll see who we grab. Samuelsson and Sykora are still available.

Hiya Canucks fan here.

Accidentally clicked into your forum and read through this thread so I'll give you guys some info that you guys will probably be keen on knowing.

Ohlund would still get ice time with the other capable D-men (most noticably Sami Salo) but often his role for the past..half decade or more was as the "baby sitter" of the team.

Some notable pairings were:

Ohlund - Sopel (when Sopel broke out offensively)
Ohlund - Baumgartner (Baumers only full NHL season which got him a 2 year 2.4 million dollar contract right away...and then ticket to the AHL a month later)
Ohlund - Edler

and last year when Davison was in the lineup Ohlund would be paired with him.

IMO a perfect choice to play with Hedman.
