the one English-only and one French-only pick announcement

Calgary used English only in announcing their pick
Montreal used French only to announce their pick

Every other of the first 20+ teams was respectful enough to ensure they did both, even bringing two guys to the mic if needed to do it.

I was totally NOT surprised at the two franchise cities that snubbed the other language, so typical of the two places, really.

Did you notice?

Did Luongo speak any English? I think Vancouver might have gone completely Francophonic.

He did.
Right after he congratulated the Pens on the Cup win, he went to English to select Jordan "Schrohder"

In any event, I don't really count Garth Snow's "Bonjour" as much French.

Didn't Dallas use only English? I think they also skipped any type of speech and just walked up to the mic and said "The Dallas Stars Select Scott Glennie".

i know about the pens picking later in the round

but for the first 20+ picks.... just two teams stood out in their singularity

the first half of the first round was the exciting formal part

as the first round winds down, and for the rest of the draft, it's just get-it-done mentality, the formalities of course drop to the wayside

so you noticed

of course it's not a big deal, just a comment, seemed apt... if you asked me to guess which cities would not use both languages i would have guessed them, just seemed so reflective, that's all

If one population refuses to speak any other language than it's own, then it's French speaking people.

That's TYPICAL.

Yeah, but you did imply a bit of lack of respect, and I don't think that was the agenda or intent.

I was actually annoyed with the bi-lingual thing halfway through the Tavares pick. It helped make this a NFL-style first round. Then again, my team was picking 30th, so I was inherently impatient.

Believe me, Calgary is rabidly pro-English, anti-French (definitely anti-Quebec sentiments), compared to other cities.

DO HO HO let's suck up to Montreal by speaking Quebecois when it really doesn't matter and when all they want to hear is who we're drafting.

After what happened two picks earlier, I doubt he was even capable to speak French.

That's correct, no redundant French translation to appease the pro-Francophone masses in Montreal like most other teams were forced to do. Just short and sweet.

Well, not so sweet to most of the fans on the Stars board.

The Capitals also only spoke English (and took maybe 60 seconds to announce the pick).

As it has been pointed out, Brian Burke didn't speak any french.

It really doesn't matter though. It was just a nice gesture by some teams. Timmins speaking french for the whole speech was pretty weird, I didn't know what the heck was going on, and I'm francophone.

No big deal. It'd be a nice gesture, but nothing about disrespect or anything like that.

It really is okay to have a little class in Montreal and respect the fact that we have two official languages. That's not a whole lot to expect from adults.
