Entry draft, Day 2

Well Flames have 7 picks today including two in the 3rd and two in the 4th. We should get some interesting prospects hopefully.

The Flames need to draft at least 2 goalies as depth is a concern there.

Looking at central scouting rankings I am hoping two guys the Flames could maybe grab in the 3rd round are D Jesse Blacker from Windsor and RW Burke Gallimore from Saskatoon.

jeremy morin
toni rajala
alex hutchings
--taylor doherty: love him
tomas tatar

Flames take Ryan Howse (Chilliwack, WHL) with the 74th pick.

Led the Bruins in scoring with 31G, 13A, 44PTS in 61GP.

5'11'' 180lbs (hockeydb).

Flames choose LW Ryan Howse from Chilliwack Bruins 74th overall.

Surprisingly Alex Hutchings still available

Ryan Howse draft ratings:

The Hockey News - 75th

International Scouting Services - 58th

Bob McKenzie - 71st

Central Scouting Bureau - 37th North American

Looks like a solid pick. Flames were lacking depth at LW. Now have Howse at LW, Nemisz at RW and Backlund/Wahl down the middle for our higher end forward prospects.

Now time to pick some goalies.

Confused - NHL.com lists the 107th pick (4th round) as LA's. That was ours from Columbus as part of the Lalande trade. ANyone know what's up?

(we still have the 111th pick in the 4th round).

I'm guessing we used it to trade up from 84 to 74 pick Howse

RW Henrik Bjorklund (Farjestads, SEL) with the 111th pick.

6'2'' 200lbs, no points in 10 games (don't know what his junior stats would be like). Has good size and an awesome name, other than that I know **** all.

I don't really care if he ever plays a game, I might get his jersey anyway.

Wow, Howse was a -24 on his team, and there is only one player with a who does not have a - or 0 rating. This could mean that his teammates are not that good and his stats aren't a true reflection of his play. He could turn out to be a great pick.

Bennet looks to me to be a depth powerforward.

Howse was a great pick. I honestly don't see a big drop from Carter Ashton to this guy. Both got 30 goals, while Ashton did it playing for a good team in Lethbridge, Howse did it playing for the Chilliwack Bruins. Very good pick.

Central scouting final rankings:

Henrik Bjorklund - 23rd European skater

Spencer Bennett - 142nd North American skater

Flames filling up on wingers, need a goalie or two now.............

60GP 20G, 21A, 41PTS for Surrey (6th on team, 3rd in goals), led them in playoff scoring with 6 in 9 games.

Looks like he'll need to fill out that frame. Going to Alaska-Anchorage for uni, judging by his PIMs he doesn't have much of a mean streak either. 4 years to wait and see if he's got NHL capability.

nice pick..was hoping Vancouver would try to grab him later on...

and don't worry Chilliwack is a brutal team right now.

well atleast when he finally makes it to the AHL....it's only a 20 min drive from where he is playing now.

Thing is that his team(Farjestad) doesn't have a junior team in J20. He has overgrown J18 league for sure(59 pts in 29 games last season) and this year he played against men in div 1. Stats are 38 games 21 goal 35 pts 83 PIM.

He is very agressive, physical player with big shot and 6'3 205 lbs body. Issue is probably skating, but it's a bit overblown.

Seems like our scouts have done a decent job this year, but we'll have to wait and see.

Some interesting and intriguing picks for sure.

Howse is a very unsutter like pick. Pure sniper which is nice, but has a few knocks on him that are concerning. Work ethic isn't always there and he is pretty soft from all accounts. 30 goals on a bad Chilliwack team though is impressive. They moved up to get him too so they must like him quite a bit.

The others I really don't know much about. Bjorklund looks like a solid pick though. Big kid who has some skill. Ortio the goalie was scouted by McLennan and is from Kipper's hometeam. Have to think they have watched quite a bit of him. Was Finland's starter for the U18's.

With the trades and the picks it looks to be a pretty good day for the flames.

Rajala falling to the Oilers at 101 was a huge surprise to me, keeping in mind that some people still had him as a late first rounder to early second rounder.

Looks like the Oil capitalized on two falling players. Imagine if a year ago they knew they were getting Paarjvi-Svensson and Rajala.

Hemsky will most likely be their most important mentor, so that they are prepared for the 'tunnel of deaths'.

Jokes aside, these are great picks for the Oil, in particular at their respective positions in the draft.

Not to worry, I am sure they will be very well rated by Hockeys Future.....
