Good move for the Flames. Their D doesn't suck so much now, assuming he signs.

Sutter continues to operate as if there is no salary cap. Assuming Phanuef stays and Bouwmeester signs the Flames are going to have a single line of scoring forwards.

Can't blame the Flames...

for going for him cuz really what do they lose, just a 3rd round pick and if he signs well it'd be a 3rd round pick for a top d-man since Leopald wasn't going to be here next year by the sound of it anyways.

Im pretty sure he'll be a Flame. Sure a lot better then the overpayment the Flyers did on Pronger lol.

The Flames just traded Vandermeer to Phoenix (for Brandon Prust, who most Flames fans loved during his first sting with the club)....there goes a nice chunk of cap space to help the Bouwmeester situation.

Obviously, Bouwmeester's a UFA.

Yep, these two trades are strongly connected and hopefully part of a masterplan.

If Calgary signs Bouwmeester, I'm thinking they'll trade Phaneuf for Heatley. I'm sure they'll make another trade or two.

The Flames D sucked last season so this would help. But fitting him in under the cap- while it can be done- will leave them with what exactly at forward? Say they let all their UFAs walk: Aucoin, Warrener, Roy (Prust fills goon role again), Camallerri and Bertuzzi. Then they also need to re-sign RFAs Bourque, Greentree (maybe) and Chucko which won't quite be costly but Pardy is a Class VI UFA so he'll be a priority. Considering J-Bo will cost at least 6M per year, then the challenge is finding some team who will take Primeau and/or Langkow off the books so they can actually skate 18 guys in a game next year. That would leave them with this and whatever cap space is left (not sure if there would be much in such a scenario):

Bourque-Jokinen-Iginla
Moss-Conroy-Boyd
Glencross-Backlund-Greentree/Peters
Peters/Chucko-Armstrong/Sutter-Van Der Gulik/Greentree

Bouwmeester-Regehr
Phaneuf-Sarich
Pardy-Giordano
(A good D corps I have to say but not "best ever" or even best in the league exactly)

On the plus side, they get younger up front but adding J-Bo would force a youth movement at forward IMO. Is it just me or are the Flames masters of the "One year attempt to rebuild" thing. They've added more big time acquisitions since the lockout than even the Rangers. It's stop gap stuff while Sutter tries to actually get some quality youth in there I would hope for Flames fans sake.

Well that would actually add money to the cap. They'd have to throw in another player with Phaneuf if they want to alleviate cap problems and I doubt Ottawa wants injury prone Primeau or the contract of Langkow but you never know. The Flames might have to part with a young guy too but with a team squeezed to the cap limit adding a J-Bo and Heatley, you can bet they'll be a mass exodus of other talent and the Flames will be like the Rangers West with a handful of huge contracts and a remaining team of cheap talent (good and bad variety). They'll have one great d-corps and one great scoring line and a bunch of question marks elsewhere. It's all Daryll's attempt to convince ownership he's a genius who deserves the job for life. But if it all plays out in a 1st round exit again, to me the guy will never bring them to a cup if he can't after 5 years of the moves he's been making.

I think this signals that Sutter is going to sign Bouwmeester. I don't think you dump a capable defenseman like Vandermeer without having a guy to replace him. Flames fans can talk all about the steps Pardy took last season, but he was terrible down the stretch and looked like a scared rookie. If Sutter is dealing away a veteran defenseman it is because he has another in place to replace him. Don't forget that the Flames defense will have lost Vandermeer, Leopold, Aucoin and Warrener as veterans. You need something substantial to replace that veteran presence. I think Sutter is getting Bouwmeester signed.

No chance Phaneuf will be moved, especially with Sutter coaching.

Bourque nor Greentree are RFA.

And Prust is not a UFA.

In fact all 3 are signed for a combined 2.4 million.

Well I didn't say Prust was a UFA but I made a mistake on Bourque but the website I looked up says Greentree and Chucko are RFAs (unless Greentree already got his contract which I would've missed obviously). So is Boyd but I gather he's been re-signed too.

Yeah, judging by how Calgary just dumped Vandermeer's contract on PHX it looks like JB is a Flame.

Well the defense would be improved, though definitely expensive (roughly 23.5 M on it alone and almost 30M if you include the goalies) but at forward they'd need the same unexpected production from Bourque and Glencross because Cammy's near-40 goals will be tough to replace and Bertuzzi's loss matters a little, not a lot (he was pretty average if you ask me). I think the Flames are hedging their bets on increased production from Langkow, the rookies and having Jokinen for a whole season (although that means we'll see some real highs and lows if his time as a Flame in 2009 was any indication).

They need to dump a lot more than that. I think Sutter learned a lesson about the salary cap late last year.

Some people speculate that Sutter might take a top-heavy offensive corp., and just get secondary scoring from his defense. (Which isn't unreasonable)
