Let's see if Sutter can get this done. I won't hold my breath yet.

aww

Even though I doubt he signs with Calgary (unless you guys preform some mad magic with the cap), if you guys get him signed, grats.

I am a little unsure about something and was wondering if someone might be able to clear it up?

Under the CBA, would the Flames be allowed to go over the cap to sign Bouwmeester and THEN make a trade to get back under (some sort of temporary cushion?). Or is there a restriction that would state that at no time can they go over?

I ask this because I am wondering if they had to trade Vandermeer to even attempt to sign Bouwmeester, or if they could have signed Bouwmeester and then traded Vandermeer later to get back under?

trading vandermeer is a great start, thats a 1.5 mill dollar difference between his contract and prusts, plus aucoin is gone that eliminates 4 mill.

who knows maybe he'll decide to trade phaneuf too that'll be another 6.75, if dions gone that won't break my heart. next trade our tough guy captain who's set to take a career nose dive because of father time.

Sutter said on the FAN960 that he couldn't sign Leopold, and Leo gave him a list of teams he'd like to play in. Panthers were on that list. So it didn't look like we would have signed Leopold anyways.

Calgary was on Bouwmeester's list of teams he was interested in coming to, so there's a good chance Sutter can sign him.

From what I understand, we can go 10% over the cap in the offseason. I haven't verified it, but I'm reasonably sure.

Go Sutter!! Even thought the end of the season was not so dandy, Sutter has consistenty made some big moves to improve the team, this move to try and land Jay Bo and acquiring Jokinen and Leopold at the dead line were very good moves. Unfortunately the rest is then up to coaches and the players... but I do raise my thumbs up at Sutter for he well crafted efforts.

C'mon Jay Bo, sign in CGY land!!!!!!!!!

there is no cap from the end of the regular season until July 1st... as of July 1st you can exceed the cap by 10% until the day final rosters have to be set

Awesome news. Maybe Sutter can sign Cammalleri to a 1 year 1 million dollar sweetheart deal like Selanne/Kariya did with Colorado a few years ago. Convince him to stay for one more year for a good shot of going deep into the Playoffs.
I know, wishful thinking.

If the rumor that Bouwmeester is building a house in Calgary is true then why the hell would a young guy build a house in a city he wouldn't be living in? Since his next contract will be anywhere from 6 to 10 years it just doesn't make sense.

I'm of the opinion that Calgary is Jay's first choice as long as he's happy with the dollars offered.

In order to do that, dont you have to have a reputation for winning?

With Vandy gone clearing some cap space and JBo building a house, it seems as if there must already be some sort of verbal agreement between the team and Bouwmeester. Great move by Sutter though

I stated in the Cammalleri thread that I feel the fact the Cammy is not coming back to the Flames next season, that shows a hard indication that Sutter would be going after Jbo. I hope he can get this done, and I feel that he has a more than good chance to do it. Jbo's an Alberta boy, his girlfriend lives here, he's building a home a here and its been no secret that Sutter has wanted this guy for a looonggg time. So I think we have an above average chance. Plus, us and Philly were rumored to be the front runners to land him, and now that Philly got Pronger that pretty much takes them out of the equation.

Go Flames!

Wow hard not to get excited with this news. I am really surprised as I just didn't think Bouwmeester was an option for the flames. But now with his right's acquired and the trading of Vandermeer I have to think Sutter is pretty confident he'll get a deal done. Really hoping Bouwmeester signs before Wednesday.

I know it's only been a few hours, but was really hoping we'd hear more from someone about a potential new contract. All that I've read is that Bouwmeester seems set on testing the market (that being from the main forum thread) but I don't know why that would be the case if J-Bo does want to play in Calgary, and I'm sure we had to be one of the teams he wanted to play for.

Patience I suppose!

I think it's pretty much a done deal that Bouwmeester signs in Calgary. I see you guys offering him ~$6.5M per season which is perhaps a little less than what he'd fetch on the open market.

I could also picture a scenario of Bouwmeester waiting until July 1st and then signing with Calgary so he could see if a team makes an offer he couldn't refuse.

For the Canucks sake, I REALLY hope he waits until July 1st, but I'm not holding my breath.

In support of what Lunatik said:
Quote:
In addition, from July 1 to the last day of training camp, teams may exceed the Upper Limit by no more than 10%. For 2008-09, the absolute highest teams can go during the offseason (from July 1 to the end of training camp) is $62.37 million. Players who finished the prior season on LTIR are excluded for the purpose of offseason calculations.
