Joonas Nattinen, among his other qualities, is a monster in the faceoff circle. Way above 60% agains guys his age and 55%+ in his limited stint in the SM-Liiga against men.

He would have been a good pick at 35, let alone 65.

Getting Nattinen at #65 is even more a steal than Leblanc at #18 IMHO.

Talent Analysis

Nattinen is very good at analyzing the game – whether spotting teammates to create offense in the attacking zone or supporting defenders either in transition or in the defensive end. He has the size and willingness to win loose pucks either along the boards or in mid-ice. Not a natural scorer or shooter, he possesses a decent enough wrist shot that is accurate and quick. He plays with a lot of spirit and competitiveness and is very unselfish – often looking to create plays rather than shoot the puck. He is a disciplined player who does not take many penalties, though he could utilize his size to play more physically at times. Confident, for a young player (appeared in 19 SM-Liiga games as an 18-year-old and did not look out of place), he has the potential to be a special player as he grows and improves his strength.
Future

Could be a second round pick in the 2009 draft. Projects as a two-way player, maybe a checker in the NHL.

Once again, I'm loving the type of Players Gainey is targeting in this draft. I think that Joonas will one day play on a line with Guillaume and Lapierre as a sick checking line

Soon as I read his scouting report I thought the same thing. His speed and size should mean he just need to put on the weight to crash with these two, hopefully he has the vision to play centre so we can move Max to the wing where I think he would be better suited. Either way hard not to like the pick a solid prospect for a third round pick for certain.

good pick as we need more solid defensive checkers/PKers to play against top lines. When's the last time we had a really good defensive C? Carbo? Dackell?

I suggest we should all stay calm before giving the label of checker. He has some interesting offensive potential. Might not be a scorer, but as a centerman, I could live with him passing to his wingers and getting more assists than goals. He has a great hockey sense and a nice vision.

Great player, when I heard Montréal drafted him. I assumed they traded for a 2nd. Never thought he would fall to the 3rd.

Agreed, from his ratings on TSN (36), Hockey News (36), ISS (28), Red Line (29), McKeen's (59) and Central Scouting (10: European Skaters) I thought he would around 35-40.

This seems like a really, really strong pick for us.

McKeen's doesn't appear to be very high on him. They rated him at 59 and had the following to say about him:

- Unwillingness to play in the trenches
- Avoids contact
- Allergic to confrontation down low
- Slows down when plays shifts to corner so teammates can get the puck
- Tendency to float and be out of it mentally
- Lacks soft touch around the net
- Lacks offensive vision and isn't overly creative with the puck
- Average skating and speed
- Tendency to stop moving his feet with the puck on his stick
- Needs to improve on faceoffs

True. A checking center is his downside, which isn't bad a downside at all.
IIS report on Nattinen:

International Scouting Services: "A big hard-nosed two-way centerman who can play with finesse and power, Nattinen has been climbing the rankings and landing himself on many NHL clubs radars with his great two way ability. He can play a variety of roles, and has a strong understanding of system play. He drives the net hard and is extremely difficult to move once he gets there. He centered Finland's explosive 'cage' line during the WJC in Ottawa and proved to be the most consistently effective center on the team for the tournament. Apart from his great physical qualities, he has a strong skill set that includes a hard shot, smooth stick and very strong passing instincts."

I'm very happy with this pick.
