“Montreal is a very good city and a very good team; the team with the most tradition in the NHL,” said Avtsyn with some translation help from Nikolai Vakourov, the Habs’ Russian scout. “I hope to come to North America after next year.

“I play a physical style with lots of speed and a hard shot but I need to work on my game away from the puck. I will work hard to do it," added Avtsyn. "I try to play the same way that Ovechkin plays. Having the Russians around the Canadiens dressing room will definitely make it easier to be comfortable in Montreal, too.”
I definetely like his attitude towards coming here.

Yeah! I like how he says North America and not the Habs... meaning he's willing to pay his dues in the AHL. Or at least, that's what I read into it.

Wow, that's a pretty intriguing interview. Already talking about being in the dressing room with other russians. Really sounds like he wants to play in the NHL. I'm praying we get lucky here.

Good point...

Did he play in the second league because he wasn't good enough for the KHL or because he wasn't old enough?

EDIT: Anyone hope for S KostitSYN - A AvtSYN - A KostytSYN? Sin line?

Timmins definately said that. But I'm wondering if it hasn't have more to do with the talent he has than the leagues he could play in. The way he said it, it made me thought that he meant that he could have the talent to already be an AHL'er.

I will have to go with not good enough. Still it's not good enough than the ELITE PLAYERS 'cause even at that age, if you're playing in the KHL, you don't see a whole lot of icetime.

Can't wait to see the CHL Import draft to see who's going to take a chance on him.

As far as I know he could...unless he's signed to a contract over there?

Filatov played for syracuse this year.

Exactly - I'm not big on Habs taking Eastern Europeans, but, as you said - spending a 4th rounder on a guy that Habs may have a hunch on, seems OK - not a big risk!

I'd cringe if they had spent a 1st through 3rd round choice on an Eastern European player!

In recognizing talent, absolutely.

I will really believe it when he's also able to recognize who's willing to come over and who's not.

Timmins practically feinted when Renaud Lavoie mentioned the pick to him, said he already plays a NA style and the reason he got passed up was because of his nationality, which shouldn't be a concern after his comments

Agreed.

Anyways, Snake you should know that.. wasn't Avtsin the highly touted russian prospect a few years ago.. I remember reading back then he was projected to be the best russian forward for the 2009 draft... ??

Nope. That was Andrei Kuchin. And the kid wasn't selected today.

“Whenever he wants to come here, he can play in Hamilton. I wouldn’t be afraid to put him in Hamilton right now, today,” gloated Timmins. “This young man, I’ve seen him play in this league. He was the leading scorer in the second league in Russia, which is the one right under the KHL. This guy plays a North American style of game, north-south.

“Alexander does it all; he plays hard, he’s in the corners, he can shoot the puck, he can make plays and he’s passionate about the game.” continued Timmins. “For us, he has first round ability but his nationality and lack of exposure is probably why he didn’t get taken earlier. He’s made a commitment. He’s here today in Montreal, he was here at the combine and he wants to play here.”

A question for those who know the CBA better than i do.

Can a European prospect play in the AHL before he reaches 20 years old? If so i'd like him to start playing in our system as soon as possible and not waste time in Russia.
