New to hockey - Chelsea Piers in NYC

Hi,

I'm pretty new here, finally decided to jump into playing ice hockey.
I've been taking a skating class for about 2-3 months now, I can skate forward and backward, crossover forward and backward, and hockey stop and pivot, however I have little practice with an actual puck.

Theres a spot open for me on a D8 (lowest division) team at Chelsea Piers for this coming march, Im wondering if anyone knows what the skill level is like in that division or if anyone has any pointers for a first timer.

Thanks

Go and join D8, it's a really laid back division. I've only seen a handful of games from that division, but you should join. It will be rough at first, but you will get better with every game.

Join up! If you're too good for the league and it's boring you might be able to talk to Bashawn Davis (head of adult hockey) about moving up to a team in 7a or 7b at some point.

if you have the time and extra cash for it I recommend the hockey clinic on monday nights. The coaches there are ex-pros and Olympians.

Thanks for the input, looks like another clinic starts in April according to their website. If I can scrounge up the fundage for both D8 and that Ill definitely do it!

Practice stickhandling whenever you can. When you practice don't just practice with the puck in front of you, practice controlling the puck (or ball, or soda can) around your entire body. If you can master puck control around your entire body it will be very hard for other players to get the puck from you, and you will also be able to receive a lot more passes. Check out my site howtohockey.com and you can subscribe to my posts (I'll be adding all kinds of hockey tips)
