Giguere vs Luongo

Who is the better goalie up to this point? Both were highly rated QMJHL goalies, both bounced around the league before becoming established. Both are capable of being workhorse goalies, though Giguere seems to have lost his spot in Anaheim. Luongo has the reputation for being the superior impact goalie with the Hart consideration and Vezina talk and Team Canada, but Giguere had the unreal 2003 cup run where he was nearly invincible with a Conn Smythe in a losing effort and a cup win in Anaheim in 2007.

Canuck fans will not even bother replying. With the exception of me saying this.

Waste of time. We won't even care if LUongo loses this one. No point. Waste of cyber space.

I think it's legit. Luongo's got the reputation (as seen by everybody's response) but Giguere's the one with the cup and the Conn Smythe right? Yeah you can make the argument that the Ducks 2007 team was stacked but the 2003 team sucked as much as any of Luongo's crappy Florida teams yet they were one game away from the cup. Luongo's got the big time reputation for being a franchise goalie, but to me, it looks like Giguere put his team on his back in a more significant way than Luongo's ever done.

And it's not like I'm biased for Giguere either, I'm a Luongo fan.

It's interesting how you said the "better goalie up to this point". Giggy is the only one with any hardware up to this point, so you could be inclined to give him the edge up to this point. Whereas the traditional knock still remains for Luongo - he hasn't won anything. I think that right now Luongo is the better goalie and he provides his team with the better chance to win, but up to this point Giggy has won more.

Yeah, I mean if you look at their careers, Giguere's the one with the accomplishments, but it's taken for granted Luongo is the superior goaltender. He's the guy mentioned for Team Canada, the MVP, best player out of the 97 draft, etc. And to be honest I'd probably rather have Luongo if both were free to pick up, but at the same time, Giguere's the one with the resume and the dream 2003 playoff run.

Their reputations are kind of interesting. One guy gets it done but is the inferior goalie by common sense, and the other one's got the sterling reputation.

You're going to get criticism, but I think it's because you were imprecise in the wording of your question.

I think you meant, "who has had the better career up to this point?" and I would honestly vote Giguere.

Obviously Luongo is "better" now.

He's also got the Pronger and the Niedermayer too though.

The Stanley Cup is a team achievement.

Luongo is twice the goaltender.

Luongo. For a big guy, he's actually capable of making acrobatic saves.

Well he certainly could have played a lot better in the Chicago series.

Honestly though Luongo is more talented than Giguere. He's a much better goalie when you only factor in skill. He just doesn't have the hardware like Giggy.

Im voting for the guy whos solid in the regular season but comes up huge in the post season. 03 giguere wins the conn smythe on a losing team in the finals when his team is about the same skill wise as any of luongos florida teams, then in 06 giguere takes anaheim to the western conference finals, then in 07 wins a stanley cup. In my opinion despite the cup giguere is vastly under rated. I think if giguere can put up another good run in the playoffs hes going to have a good shot at the hockey hall of fame.

Luongo is the overall better goaltender, but is still slightly overrated. He's too inconsistent and hasn't been able to get hot at the right times. The stars will align for him one day though, like they did for Giguere.

Luongo is far over-rated. Have fun with your 2010 in Vancouver.

Giguere has had the better career thus far.

Luongo is a far better goalie but Giguere has accomplished alot more in his career so far and has been much better in the playoffs.

Sorry dude I love Jiggy wholeheartedly but even as a Ducks fan I am shocked that he got 12 votes

It's funny how big the difference seems to be here on HFboards compared to the actual stats.

Career NHL save-%:

Luongo .918
Giguere .914

GAA:
Luongo 2.57
Giguere 2.48

Quite close right?

Luongo gets the better rap because he makes more acrobatic saves. For some reason so many people see that as a sign of being the better goalie when usually it's just the opposite, the more you have to flail & flop around the grease, the more mistakes you have committed to get there.

Anyway, it's obvious that Giguere is far superior when it comes to actual accomplishments and that's good enough for me.
