Perhaps the Preds were going for the most offensively talented player available, regardless of position?

I think STL has taken a page from the NAS playbook...4 drafts in a row they've chosen a d-man in the 1st round (EJ, Cole, Pietrangelo, Rundblad). Sure, they were probably the BPA at the time they were drafted, but you can never go wrong with building a surplus of strong d-men. They've drafted 12 d-men in the last 4 drafts...many of whom have tremendous upside if they can reach full-potential.

this gives them alot of trade commodities. They obviously feel Ellis will become a very good prospect, and you'll likely see some trades being done to deal these guys to teams that need defencemen like ellis, blum, franson, etc. They'll keep the ones they like the most, and deal away the ones they might not need for very good forward prospects.. but i agree Kassian would have been a much more effective choice by nashville

uhh what about the Thrash

Bogosian will be a future Norris winner
Enstrom is one of the best puck movers in the game
Kulda will be a solid top 4 guy
Zubarov if he comes over should be solid as well
Valabik has the potential to be a dominant shut down d man
Paul Potsma is looking like another solid offensive defenseman
Grant Lewis will make a great d man as well

The NYI comparison was a good one. David Poile is a tried-and-true BPA guy, and he's reiterated that they felt like Ryan Ellis was BPA at 8, let alone 11, and that they felt like there was a "significant drop" in talent from Ellis to the forwards that were available when they picked.

There's a lot of rumors and hints that Hamhuis will be traded this offseason for scoring help if they can't sign someone suitable...drafting this slew of great d-men bolsters the ability to do so.

That's nice, but Atlanta's defense doesn't hold a candle to Nashville's. Not even close.

Sorry that you felt left out though...

I love how every good dman prospect is a lock as a "future Norris winner". Just how easy do people think it is to be the top dman in the world?

Also in the junior/minor ranks still,

Cody Franson, Jonathan Blum, Ryan Ellis, Roman Josi, Alex Sulzer, and C-O Roussel.

And EVERYONE one of those six guys have a real shot at making it as very solid players, possibly stars, on the blueline.

That is a total of 8 amazing young defensemen under 25, and only 1 over which is Hamhuis at 26.

Nashville I think is safe to say that they are more than set on the blueline for years to come. But I mean we need offensive big time!!! With Wilson and hopefully Budish coming up as big stars for us in the future, we still need something for now, but still a young player.

Do you think Nashville possibly signs a goal scoring/ point producing player or they trade some of the Defense (Hamhuis, Zanon, Franson) for some offense???? What kind of player status woudl Hamhuis fetch alone???

Also,

Is it safe to say that no other team can hold a candle to Nashville when it comes to highly potential young blueliners????
LA and St. Louis both have defensive depth that may not surpass Nashville's but it definitely noteworthy.

A few years ago I was hoping the Kings would deal Frolov for 1 of Nashville's young defenseman + but now the Kings have solid depth on the blueline.

Johnson I could understand people saying he is not living up to expectations, but Teubert is 19 and hasn't played in the AHL or NHL at all yet so I don't know what you're trying to say there.

I agree that Nashville's defense is insane... they should be trading a few of them for offense.
Peter Chiarelli called, he wants his Defenceman back.

Well no, it isn't. The Kings young guys are great. I have only seen 2 mentions of the Blues young D (figures).

Johnson-Pietrangelo
Cole-Rundblad
Polak-Junland

All under the age of 23.

I think if I had to give it to 1 I'd still give it to the Preds, just because the top 2 guys are very much established.

But it is much closer than you say.

This thread isn't about the Kings, it's about the Predators.

It's like us making a Doughty thread, and than someone coming in saying "omg Schenn is so much better!!!"
