True, but do you see him at age 39 playing in Hart form?

Lindstrom managed it.

if we can sign him for 4 years at $6 mill we have to do it. Front load it.

I know its a different story, but Pronger's success has never been built on speed, which is the first thing to go with age. Barring any major injuries, its a trade off of his veteran leadership for JBo's age. For this team, I'll take the leadership.

Meh, I never said I wouldnt take him. I said I dont think he should get a 6.6 for 5 years type of thing (which is a raise of what he gets now). I'd do a 6 mil for 4 years...

that makes guerin, tkachuck, and now lehtinen so knuble and his agent need to realize the market is being set.

What a 3rd round pick gets you...

I remember trading the 1st pick in the 2nd round for Martin Biron...

The problem was nobody was going to take a cap hit without giving something back (other then the habs apparently).

Not per se... But it is now a starting place... Now the other top Ds can be obtained trough trades and signings. My guess is that the effect of this deal will be the new base for the top tier D-men. From this 5 year/$6.6M the other's will be hacked out -- "Surely you're not saying that your client is as good as J-Bo"... or; "Your client is x years older, we will have to adjust"... or; "My client has all this hardware plus a Cup and a track record... He has to be worth at least that much".

Before now, Pronger may have been thinking $7M-up... Or the GMs could have been thinking that the market had regressed. I think NOE Homer can sit down and hammer out a deal with a better idea of the market value set by Calgary and J-Bo.

Just a thought.

In honesty though, while it probably wasn't worth it now, it was probably worth at the time being able to actually win games, even if they didn't mean much.

It was a done deal going in... just as Homer knew Kimmo and Hartnell would sign here, Calgary knew J-Bo would sign there... and the other teams didn't know he wouldn't sign with them, and wouldn't through away any assets with the agent saying he was hitting the market.

I prefer the main thread. It's long, but as details of the trade are revealed, agony/anger builds dramatically.

Here's a synopsis:

"Wow, got rid of Higgins. Ok. Cool. Just hope its not for Gomez (hahaha that would never happen)"

"Umm. Just heard Gomez, that's weird."

"RDS confirms.. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHUUUUUURRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH"

"Why would we do this? I wonder what prospects we get for taking on this salary dump. Gomez sucks."

"McDo WTFFFFFFFFF?!?!?!?!?!?!?! best prospect in our system too?!??!?!"

And then it basically devolved into a Lord of the Flies scenario where everyone started chanting "kill! kill! kill!" I'm thinking Gainey's head will be put on a pike by the city entrance some time tomorrow.

I think it's a good trade for MTL. Maybe the anger is more over it now becoming obvious the Vinny L pipe dream has been destroyed.

I think its only good if they get someone who will be a great fit for Gomez via FA. Otherwise, that's a lot of salary to take on when you also ship out your top prospect and the only left-handed D-man in your system.
