top-6 defensemen for 09-10

I'm mid debate with a co-worker with regards to the blueline of the Blueshirts for next season.

What do you want the top-6 to look like next year, and what do you EXPECT it to look like (if different than what you want, which is often the case with fans )??

Staal, Girardi
Redden, Gilroy
Alberts(FA) Sauer
Potter

Waiting for call up is Sanguinetti

I expect Rozsival moved for a forward that makes 2-3 million and that has also underachieved

He costs more but what about Cheechoo from SJ at 3 million. I would take back Lukowich to make it work too

Staal-Sauer
Girardi-Sanguinetti
Redden-Del Zotto

I honestly believe Sather is fed up with the cost of FA defenseman and is prepared with Torts as coach to make the big push to develop 3 rookie defenseman. The reality is that you aren't going to beat Oveckhin, Crosby or Malkin with any FA defenseman we add or with a lousy PP. I do not believe they want Del Zotto to waste next year playing in the OHL.

I also believe how Sanguinetti plays in the NHL and Gilroy at the AHL this year will determine which one gets dealt to possibly dump the contract of Gomez.

Questions:

- expecting more help brought in via trade or FA?

- expecting Slats to 'bite the bullet' and buy out Redden if trading him is not possible?

- Gilroy a sure thing to be in top-6?

I give Gilroy virtually no chance of making the NHL this year. He is a smaller defenseman and playing college hockey as an overage kid in no way prepares him for the NHL. I would be shocked to see him in the NHL at any point this year.

errrrrrr does he not have a one way contract?

Gilroy makes it, Sauer too.......I think they sign a Tougher UFA like Alberts at the back end.....move Rozy......don't rush Sanguinetti , he will get called up in the year anyways

I thought his deal was one-way as well. Wouldn't he be subject to waivers if attempted to be sent to the A?

I don't think Gilroy is subject to waivers. That said, I see him getting a very good look and a great shot at making the team out of camp.

Staal, Girardi, Redden, Rozy, Del Zotto, Gilroy
Sauer

It sounds as if Sangs will need some more time...and that's fine with me.

It is one way. And yes, he would be subject to waivers. He was signed to play for the NHL team and he will.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. I think at his age he has at least one year of waiver exemptions.

Matt Gilroy is listed at 6'2", 205 lbs. He's not small and I wouldn't be surprised if one of his goals over the summer is to add some extra muscle.

As a graduate from a top college program and Hobey Baker winner, his goal must be to make the Rangers outright and the Rangers will give him every opportunity to do just that.

I don't really care what happens to anyone else, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Del Zotto makes it. I really love that kid and think he'll be great.

Also, we're not buying out Redden. Get used to it.

This. Unless they can trade Rozsival in the next week or two here, in which case his spot on defense is replaced by a re-signed Morris.

Gilroy's deal is one-way in the sense that he gets paid the money regardless of where he plays, but he is exempt from waivers until he plays 60 NHL games or enters the 2nd year of his contract.

I agree with this. I would be shocked if it didn't look like this.

If Roszival is traded replace him with Potter or an UFA.

I don't think rushing Del Zotto would be the best option right now. He did great this year in the OHL, but defensemen take alot of time to develop. Let him play in the NHL for 1 or 2 seasons before we consider calling him up.

If anything, Sangs would be a better choice, since he has been playing in the AHL for a while. I don't know where many of the posters on here lost confidence in him, considering they were very high on his potential last year.

There's no way Morris is getting resigned. Torts had him on the 3rd pairing against Washington. Why would they trade Rozsival's 5 mil contract just to turn around and sign Morris for 3.5-4 million? Doesn't make sense.

If Rozsival gets traded, we will either get a cheaper dman back or we will sign someone in the 2-2.5 mil range. It could be Mara, but I don't think Torts wants him back.

From all reports Del Zotto is further along than Sangs. Perhaps there is new information that I haven't seen, but that's what I've read.

The only real evidence of that is last year's training camp, where DZ outperformed Sangs by a country mile. Then again, Sangs has completed a season at the pro level, in which he finished up the season with a plus rating over the stretch at the end of the regular season. MDZ seems to have higher potential, but saying he's "further along" than Sangs seems silly to me.

Anyway, here's mine. I think Rozsival gets moved.

Staal, Girardi, Redden, Gilroy, Sauer, Potter/cheap UFA on a 1 year deal

Staal - Girardi
Redden-MDZ
Gilroy - Sauer

I think Rosi gets moved before season start.

I can't wait to see where Sanguinetti, Del Zotto and Gilroy fit in with Sauer and Potter. Cause I have little idea who, of those five, will be the most impressive in camp.

Obviously staal, girardi is a fairly set pairing but i feel like rozsy and redden will be split apart if we really are just bringing up two young players. Rozsy with the best offensive d prospect and redden with the most defensive d prospect. So assuming Rozsival doesn't get traded maybe:

Staal Girardi
Rozsival Gilroy
Redden Sauer

Regardless of who makes it out of camp, I think we all can expect to see a lot of call-ups and send-downs unless someone emerges as the obvious choice- Sanguienetti being the 1st guy in line to be called up. Del Zotto I'm betting we don't hear from until next season.

I hope we don't just sign another Kalinen instead of letting a prospect play.

Anyone think SJ would do Rozy for Cheechoo and Lukowich?

What doesn't make sense is how you came to the conclusion that Morris is going to get that type of money. He won't. He'll get no more than 3 million. Economy, anyone? There are some guys who will still get a lot of money, but those are the stars. Most other UFAs aren't going to be getting huge contracts this summer.

And what makes more sense on a cash strapped team, trading Rozsival and playing 3 rookies on the blueline, or re-signing Morris and saving about 2 mill in cap space. It won't be a to a long-term deal, either. 2 years, probably.

Quite frankly, I'm going to give Tortorella the benefit of the doubt and guess that he was just trying to spread the wealth on our very mediocre blueline, because Morris was easily the 2nd best defenseman after Staal from the day we got him. He's got a great shot, he moves the puck well, he hits hard, and he moves faster than a senior citizen (hello, Redden). By far the best PP defenseman we had.

Staal, Girardi, Sanguinetti/MDZ/Sauer/Gilroy, Redden, Rozsival.

I think you'll see two rookies plus the other 4. Not sure which will make it though. Of course some trades could change everything. However, as of today, who knows?

Yet, he only played 16:24 per game in the playoffs. You'd think someone who was easily the 2nd best dman on the team would have played more than 5th most minutes.

Maybe Morris will only get 3 mil, but it won't be from us.
