2009 ECHL Summer BOG meetings

http://www.echl.com/cgi-bin/mpublic....cat=1&id=19090

Limits league to 24 members. Currently 20 teams to play in 09-10 season; three inactive memberships.

Updates divisions, playoff format.

Looking at changing when/how schedule created, released.

24 members? Anyone think that means three 4-team divisions in each conference? Think the ECHL might try to forge a new National Conference division from defectors from the CHL plus maybe Abbotsford when their owners run out of booze? Just a thought...

Considering the team don't play divisional schedules (Elmira fans are going to see more than Johnstown, Reading, and Trenton, etc.) I think they might add 4 team out west and go 4 6-team divisions. However there are the three inactive memberships that means only one more member. Those memberships could be sold to westerners but right now they are Columbia, SC; Reno, NV; and ???

Who is the third inactive anyway?

I think there are only two dormant teams in the ECHL: Columbia and Reno.

The article said Columbia, South Carolina, so that might have made it look as if South Carolina [Stingrays] was the third dormant franchise. However, South Carolina is very much active in the league. The article was just staing what state Columbia was located in.

That being said, Reno and Columbia both seem unlikely at this point as their new arena plans seem very unlikely to come to fruition. Perhaps Columbia will join the SPHL and go back to Carolina Coliseum.

Um, yes they do. If you look at the recently-released 2009-10 ECHL schedule, you'll see that the schedules are very divisionally weighted (with the new four-team divisions).

My bad. I hadn't looked at the schedules and assumed that teams would be playing more that just the same three teams over and over.

I have seen somewhere that Columbia is about to break ground on their arena and it will be ready for 2010-2011. I'm not sure they'll get it done in time, but I hope it works out.
