yeah, from the sound of the article it was just shero listing names off the top of his head and not wanting to leave anyone out. actually, it might be more telling to see which names he didn't mention.

Unfortunately it can with the right sequence.

I don't know but raising the banner with out scuds there seems not right since he was a major factor in it.

I'm OK with re-signing Gill if other options fall through. He'd have to take a pretty serious pay-cut, though. Like to the tune of 50%, at least.

Early Wednesday (Jul 1st) Trib updates on Pens' FAs

Some excerpts:

Quote:
As of yet, the Pens didn't reach deals with Scuderi , Gill and Fedotenko.

Scuderi is high on the wish list for Tampa Bay, whose head scout, Greg Malone, was with the Penguins when they drafted Scuderi in 1998, and Minnesota, whose general manager is former Shero assistant Chuck Fletcher.
Scuds will give the Penguins a chance to match best open-market offer.

Shero was not close to a deal yesterday with Fedotenko, 30. However, he and Fedotenko's agent are expected to engage in talks again this morning.

Hal Gill will stay in contact with Penguins while fielding offers.

Philippe Boucher's return possible if Scuderi and Gill bolt.

Also, the Penguins and winger Petr Sykora are considering his potential return on a one-year deal.

I think it's time for Sykora to be let go. Unless it's for dirt cheap (we're talking below $1 million), in which case he might be a "last resort" option to fill that top-6 need if all other free agent attempts fall through.

Exactly. I don't se any reason to think that Sykora will excel in a system like this moreso than someone else we can get cheaper. A gritty, hard-working forechecker like Talbot would (and did) have better success in that spot for a lower price tag. Nothing against SYkora, but I don't think it's a good fit anymore.

With all these 10-12 year deals, I'm thankful for a GM in Shero who seems to see the big picture with these contracts.

roughly $4,756,667 remaining for a top-six winger, two bottom-pairing-caliber defensemen and a backup goalie.

There are decent top 6 wingers for around 3.5 out there. If he wants to spend to the cap which it looks like Shero almost has to.

I think you can fill the back-up goalie and both defense openings for 2 million total.. Leaves 2.5 for a top-6 winger, more depending on Dupuis.

Isn't John Curry goign to be the backup goalie for 500k?

Maybe, I've beaten this subject to death but I'd prefer a veteran back-up even if it means an extra 100-200k in salary.

I have to say... I like what the Pens front office is doing this year. We are focusing on our own and bringing in a couple under the radar players that will have a chance to make an impact for the team. It reminds me a lot of what has made the Steelers so successful year in/year out.

So this is where we stand:

Kunitz (3.725)-Crosby (8.7)-Guerin (2)
XXX-Malkin (8.7)-Talbot (1.05)
Cooke (1.2)-Staal (4)-Kennedy (0.725)
Dupuis (1.4)-Rupp (0.825)-Adams (0.55)

Orpik (3.75)-Gonchar (5)
Eaton (2)-Letang (0.835)
Goligoski (1.833)-XXX

Fleury (5)
XXX

Extra: Godard (0.75)

52.043 in the books.

I honestly see no reason Scuderi or Fedotenko cannot be kept, especially if you get rid of Dupuis.

Give Scuds 7.5 over three years (2.5 per), Curry 1.2 over two years (0.6 per) and then you have 1.657 to spend on another forward or defenseman. Dump Dupuis and you have a full three mil for that forward.

Curry has nothing else to show in the minors. He played well with the Pens last season. In a salary cap world, teams have to allow young players to progress through their system.

Scuderi is going to get way more than that....especially with Komisarek getting 4.5 and Gill getting over 2 million.

Scuderi is much closer to Hal Gill than Mike Komisarek.

2.5 is a solid estimation.

I will say though, that blue line we currently have assembled is pretty...flimsy.

Agreed. I think he'll take 2.5M from the Pens to stay here.

I really think Scuds is a great d-man when paired w/ an offensive talented partner. I think he'd be well worth 2.5, especially w/ what some of these guys are going for on the open market. Watching Komisarek get 4.5 hurts a bit...
