Carolina at the 2010 Olympics

In 2006 we had:

Canada: Eric Staal (reserve)
Czech Republic: Frank Kaberle
Switzerland: Martin Gerber
United States: Bret Hedican, Erik Cole, Doug Weight, Matt Cullen

USA is first to announce its summer camp invites for 2010, bringing 34 players together this August. Tim Gleason has been invited.

Kaberle has a shot at making the Czech team again, but it may be a long one given his recent play.

Pitkanen and Ruutu are basically locks for the Fins.

Perhaps Samsonov gets some consideration for Russia, but it's highly doubtful he has much of a chance. Babchuk should get consideration but I don't know how likely it is he makes the team.

It will be interesting to see where Staal and Ward end up with Canada.

Would Cullen get any consideration from the American?

Since he hasn't been invited to camp, nope. Gleason was the only one invited, and I highly doubt he makes the final team.

Why would they want a career ECHLer on the team?

Cole should take his absence from the Olympic list as a sign that he's probably not worth as much as he seems to think he is.

Odd that Cullen didn't at least get an invite. He's only gotten better, but I guess so has the rest of the USA talent.

I think if you had said the same thing three different ways instead of two, I might understand the question better

I'd invite him over at least Callahan, Okposo and Pavelski. Hell, it's just an orientation camp...they could have invited him as well.

Looking at that roster...man they're going to be young. IMO, they're going to be pretty underwhelming as well.

Since entering the league he has only suited up for Russia twice as far as I know. The '02 Olympics and then '04 World Cup. I doubt he even gets a look for 2010.

who I expect:
Samsonov - Russia as a reserve (is Babchuk considered Russia or Ukraine? he could have a shot if it's Ukraine, maybe as a reserve if it's Russia)
Ruutu, Jokinen, Pitkanen - Finland
Staal - Canada. Possibly Ward as the #2 or 3 depending on how he starts off next season.
Gleason has an outside shot at USA, as does Cole if he has a good start to the season.

Of that group, only Pavelski would be an option since the other two are wingers. i could see Cullen over Pavelski. The only issue is that this group is clearly being put together to win later and not neccesarily win now. It seems pretty obvious that they are going to try to build a core that can stay together for 4-8 years. Assuming this is true Cullen would have to replace one of the veterans.

Current USA Centers = Gomez, Modano, Drury, Stastny, Kesler, and Pavelski

Well would he knock anyone off, unlikely but if injuries occur, a Stanley Cup champ might be useful. Although lets face it, it would be a long shot. But I think he would have a better chance than Kaberle wouldn't he?

In my opinion I would have at least invited him to camp, it couldn't have hurt none.

Well Babchuk might be a long shot, when are rosters due? Cause if he bursted out in the first half of the season.......that could help his case.

Cullen was just on the taxi squad last time, he didn't actually play. I think Hedican was too, but I'm not 100%.

Cullen and Gleason practically have no shot with the emergence of all the young US players, not to mention they have to compete with all the other established NHL players with more international experience.

I doubt Babchuk makes the talented Russian squad either.

Staal, Ruutu, and Pitkanen are locks for their teams. If Cam continues to play well next year he could be the #3 goalie for Canada. Jussi has a chance to make the Finnish squad as well.

Hedican was a regular on the US team, but I believe that was mostly due to the comfort level that Lavi had with him

I think we are undermining Gleason a bit, just cause my mind is a little fogy, who can the Americans put up on defense?

Suter - Rafalski
Martin - Komi
Gilbert - Orpik
Erik Johnson (if he's healthy enough)

those are my picks of that group.

Not sure on EJ yet to be honest, although he'll be in the mix. Probably going to be a hard call between Gleason, Scuderi and Whitney for the last spots.
