Canadiens could have interest in Gomez

Quote:
MONTREAL CANADIENS

If there is a big-name player available, preferably a centre, via free agency or trade, there's a good chance the Montreal Canadiens are in on him.

Montreal would still love to be able to do a deal for Tampa's Vinny Lecavalier but, so far, they've been stonewalled in that regard. If the Sedins don't re-sign in Vancouver, the Canadiens are expected to be in hard on them.

Failing that, Montreal might be inclined to take Scott Gomez and his big contract off the hands of the New York Rangers. Or perhaps Danny Briere or Simon Gagne from the Philadelphia Flyers.

And if Martin Havlat doesn't end up back in Chicago, he'd be another prime consideration. Havlat, by the way, desperately wants to remain in Chicago as a Blackhawk. Desperate enough to a take a pay cut on his $6 million salary if it's on a long-term deal, but the Hawks, so far anyway, have offered him a raise but on a one-year deal.

With Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews slated to come out of entry-level at the end of next season, Chicago doesn't have a lot of long-term flexibility, even for a player who was the Chicago fans' choice as top forward and team MVP.

Cap space is precious. The Canadiens have it and a strong desire to add at least a couple of top six forwards. That's presuming of course that they re-sign Alexei Kovalev and restricted free agents Tomas Plekanec and Chris Higgins. It certainly looks like Saku Koivu, Alex Tanguay and Robert Lang won't be back in Montreal, but that may also depend on whether they land any big fish.
What return do you think the Canadiens could offer the Rangers for Gomez?

And yes, I know many names were mentioned, but I'm a Rangers fan.

It's difficult for me to come up with anything in return seeing as we only have 11 players signed right now.

Gainey has made offers to Kovalev and Komisarek. He is believed to be in the thick of things to acquire a true number one centreman, so he cannot offer contracts to those two players yet. He mentioned 5 teams.

I made a joke saying we'll end up with Gomez, or Drury, so I hope my joke doesn't come true. If it does, I'd take Drury.

No Gomez for me thank you very much. I'd rather us tank the season if it means settling for albatros contracts for yet other diminutive players.

First off please not Briere. We need a bigger center.
Gomez will not get a big return from the Habs [hopefully]because of his contract. I'm all for going after the twins. After really thinking about it getting the twins would be the best thing for the team even over Vinny as we keep our assets to help build around them.

as much as i hate the gomez contract, the fact that the rangers have such little offense as it is i would be somewhat against trading him.

The real question is what the Rangers will give the Habs on top of Gomez for us to pick him up...

Wrong. Redden is a #1 defenseman. We don't trade him for anything short of 1st + 8.0B prospect.

I don't even know who is on the Canadiens roster anymore to make a smart counter to that.

We'll give you Valiquette for Price. You could use an upgrade in goal.

Well, if we're taking that huge contract, you'll have to give something nice.

A prospect isn't that much now is it?

Ya uuuuummmmm no thanks.. you Rangers fans can keep your Gomez, Drury and Redden.. Gomez and Drury are great 2nd liners but we need a 1st liner.. Briere is too small, too expensive and injury prone.. Id like to see Gagne in a HABS uni.. injury history and all.. 40 goal scorers dont grow on trees.. Sedins arent that bad of value at a 10.5M cap hit.. 12 yrs is a lil longer then Id like tho.. Ohlund isnt too shabby.. truthfully Im not a fan of Vinny either.. If were planning on selling the farm on Vinny.. Why not call Wilson in SJ and see if Thornton is available..
