Not only did Gainey take on the terrible contract he gives up one of his top prospects in the deal.

My God, Bob what were you thinking?

Sather should have been paying you to take Gomez not vice versa.

This reeks of pure desperation on Gainey's part. He struck out at the draft trying to nab Lecavalier so he went for Gomez instead.

But P.T. Barnum was absolutely right in relation to this deal.

Just another reason why all the talk about gaining an advantage from other teams cap woes and the anticipated cap reduction appears, at least right now, to have been more words than substance.

Yet it still remains to be seen what Philly and Boston do.

UFAS (Unrestricted Free Agent Signings) minus 16.4 hours and counting.
The cap still matters, and it will have an impact. It's ridiculous to think otherwise.

You know...sometimes it takes deals like this to remind us how lucky we are to have a sane GM like Lombardi. He may be a bit slow in the process but at least he doesn't have Gainey's itchy trigger finger.

Now watch Lombardi sign Gaborik to a 10 year $85M deal and erase all of that.

Hard to believe, but that would be applauded in some quarters.

I can't believe Gainey felt he had to get rid of Ryan McDonagh, arguably the Canadiens' best prospect, on top of everything. Just horrible on Gainey's part IMHO.

Gomez just listed as one of the worst UFA signings (found on PUck daddy).

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...tion=si_latest

Puck Daddy links an article that says the Rangers are getting Heatley here.

I guess the Kings' HF organizational ranking has unofficially moved up from #4 to #3, given that Montreal was #2 before this deal.

They pretty much did

Ryan McDonagh was their 07 first rounder and their top prospect

Future

McDonagh has it all and is expected to play a key role in the Canadiens' fortunes for the next decade. If not a number-one blueliner, he would be considered a 1A, with the talent to easily stake a long-term claim on the first defensive pairing.

He meant the Rangers giving them up for someone to take his contract off their hands. Boy I can't wait for all the great players were going to get for nothing from the teams in cap hell. Stanley Cup here we come.

I think Sydor25 means that the Rangers would have had to give up a first rounder, just to offload Gomez's contract on some other team.

The Rangers actually got, rather than having to bribe a team by giving up, one of the very best defensive prospects in hockey for Gomez -- not to mention getting Higgins.

The Rangers in addition got Valentenko off of Montreal in this deal, yet another of the Habs' best prospects.

This is Jedi mind trick territory, what Sather pulled off IMO.

It's painful to see Montreal's Board but the Baghead thread is very humorous.

Of course the cap matters, its still an upper limit. (Although in another thread someone posted something about being able to go above it. . . something about performance bonus exemption..I don't know)

But to think and act as if some teams will be so constricted by it that we will be the beneficiaries of STUPIDLY one sided deals just so teams can clear cap space was niave, and for people to have bought into that, well, . . . I'm just saying.

Gomez, Drury, Briere... all bad contracts... Somehow Slats swindles Gainey into taking the contract, but I don't care how good Gomez has been, it's a bad contract for the Habs to have.

Funny how DL won't get credit for not wasting cap space on these guys when he had the chance, but took the blame from people on this board for NOT signing them at the time.
