McDonagh

Anyone know anything about him? Where does he rank among our defensive prospects?

Is he a more attractive piece than say Staal or MDZ in a deal for Heatley?

He instantly becomes our best defensive prospect. Yeah...he's that good. Rated an 8.0 B by HF.

He's the top ranked prospect for the Habs, or at least he was until 5PM today.

Here's the HF profile on him (Grade: 8.0B):
http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/ryan_mcdonagh

I'd say he's short of Staal given that Staal has NHL experience, but probably on the same level as MDZ. He plays with Stepan at the University of Wisconsin.

I'm shocked that Gainey dealt him.

McDonagh is the Canadiens top prospect. A first-round draft selection in 2007, McDonagh is a big, powerful blueliner who can provide an offensive punch. Expected to be more of a defensive blueliner when he turns pro, McDonagh is an excellent skater, with good positioning and gap control. The St. Paul, Minnesota native has good instincts and is developing more physical play. He recently completed his sophomore season at the University of Wisconsin, and competed in the 2009 U20 WJCs. Expected to become a first pairing blueliner over the next few years, McDonagh is weighing his options as to whether he will return to Wisconsin for his junior year.
HF's piece, he was ranked 18th in the recent top 50 update in April.

Had 16 points in 36 games with UofW last year, played with Stepan.

Very, very good prospect. IMO either he will be in the Heatley deal or we are giving up Girardi/Sangs.

According to Hockey's Future, he is our #1 rated prospect. Rated higher that Anisimov, Grachev, and MDZ.

Rangers future defense just got a lot deeper. Not sure I'd put him ahead of Del Zotto but I would put him ahead of Sanguinetti because he's an excellent position player with good size and great wheels.

Let's see--Staal, Girardi, MDZ, McDonagh, Sanguinetti, Sauer, Gilroy, Kundratek, Potter--wow! If Heikkinen, Dowzek, Gaulton or Urquhart become players.

Future

McDonagh has it all and is expected to play a key role in the Canadiens' fortunes for the next decade. If not a number-one blueliner, he would be considered a 1A, with the talent to easily stake a long-term claim on the first defensive pairing.

How does he compare to Staal? Obviously Staal has NHL experience but does McDonagh have a higher ceiling? There's a chance that Staal will go in the Heatley trade but the only way I'll be ok with that is if we're keeping the better d-man.

It doesnt make sense from a hockey standpoint at all, but whatever i'll take it.

Now, if Mcdonagh is part of the package going to Ottawa I wouldnt be shocked.

They're not really interchangeable. It's hard to say who would be the better of the two if you had to pick one.

It's unfortunate because a Staal - McDonagh pairing has the potential to be elite.

How did Sather pull that off.

And how does a man that is so bad at FA signings, so good at trades?

I still don't buy everyones hate for Gomez though. I hate the contract, but he was still one of our top offensive players - which says alot when he wasn't really centering anyone who could actually bury the puck.

I can't believe it, how did we get away with this? McDonagh is instantly our best defenceman prospect.

He is the part of the trade that I hate to give up. He is going to be a great defender and I can't believe we traded him... Valentenko is also pretty good and has a nasty streak. Higgins is a solid two-way forward and a NY native.

Congrats! You destroyed us in this trade.

I'm not sure what the Valentenko situation is in terms of his contract with Dynamo. I know it's a three-year deal. He's not a bad player, though. I like his game. He'd be a solid third-pairing physical guy.
