Gainey Isn't Finished!

http://www.tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie/?id=283335

Read the latest from Bob McKenzie.

"There are two things to be gleaned from the Montreal Canadiens' acquisition of Scott Gomez from the New York Rangers.

First of all, Montreal would clearly appear to be out of the running on the Sedin twins. Gomez's cap hit of $7.4 million chews up a good chunk of the $16 million that was freed up by bidding adieu to Chris Higgins, Saku Koivu, Robert Lang and Alex Tanguay. There's certainly not enough left to get two elite-level forwards.

With that said, there is more than enough remaining to get one and now the Canadiens on Wednesday are likely to target Martin Havlat, who looks like he's going to free agency because the Chicago Blackhawks are not in a position to offer him the long-term security he desires. It should be mentioned that Havlat lives in Montreal in the off-season.

If not Havlat, Marian Hossa doesn't look as though he's taking Detroit's offer, and there's always Marian Gaborik, too. The point is, one of those elite offensive wingers will be Montreal's prime target on the first day of free agency.

Mind you, the Rangers freeing up cap space with the Gomez trade means they could be going after Havlat, too."

Gainey is working on a new core of players for our team...

Gomez is just the start...

Lots of money is still left...

Let's name a few possible complimenting options;

1-Sedins are going to free agency...and Gainey still has interest

2- Vinny could still be a possibility....if Tampa gets their act together

3-Briere & Gagner as a package....would be cheap because of Briere contracts

4- Antropov....big center that we need...

5- Gaborik..

6-Hossa ....but I think he's resigning with Detroit for 4---4.5 million

7- Tanguay

8- Koivu

What do you guys think?

And of course we need to shore up our defense...

Ideas?

i think this was his "big" plan for getting us a "first-line" centerman. We're not getting anyone else.

Albeit small, neither are average centers.

Gomez is a solid 1B guy, as is Briere..They are just too much of a cap hit, unfortunately...

Gomez @ 5.5-6 per year would be ok, same for Briere...

Gainey is finished in more ways than one. He's finished making moved. Don't expect any UFA signings. He's also finished here. Molsons will fire him the day they get in. He's done.

Im pretty sure the plan was a Big 1st line center, not a small 2nd line overpaid center.

It's gonna be really tight to fit the cap if we land someone else making 7+ mil considering our D is very weak right now. Perhaps we can sign a "lesser" winger and get a top 4 D instead.

Not much is out there, not much at all. And you just know it we will be committing to these newly acquired UFA for quite some time.

Why not target Havlat and Taylor Pyatt? Some scoring and size up front.

Re-sign Kovalev, Tanguay and Schneider. Then sign a tier 2 dman like Scuderi, De Vries or Mckee.
