I'd like to see the league implement a 5 or maybe 7 year maximum on UFA contracts.

I'm not shocked. Someone like Columbus or the Islanders is going to give him a shot at their top 6 and probably pay him top 6 money. If he signs for anything at 1.5 or below I'm going to be pissed at JR, but otherwise see ya Chad.
oh hadn't thought about Columbus, yeah i could see that

OMG looks like Babs might be gone too!!!!! Are you ok kahz?

from chip: Another negotiating snag also has developed. Defenseman Anton Babchuk, a restricted free agent, was given a qualifying offer of $1 million — the same salary as last season — and Rutherford said Babchuk has said he will not play for the qualifier.

Babchuk has no arbitration rights. He could return to Russia to play hockey. Another option could be the Canes trading him.

"We have an issue with Babchuk," Rutherford said.

Bye bye Babs.

McKenzie reports Erik Cole will re-sign in Carolina.

2 year deal. Financial terms not yet released.

Pierre says Cole is lucky Jim Rutherford is a gentleman and lucky to have taken him back. The whole panel agrees.

The Hurricanes can confirm that we have re-signed Erik Cole. He will make $2.8 million in 2009-10 and 3.0 million in 2010-11.

Basically since we offered him a deal, and he said 'no thanks' and then came back after testing the waters... they were saying JR was a gentleman for taking him back

He was basically saying Cole should be lucky that Jimmy didn't just brush him off, he was nice enough to leave the door open.

Erik Cole has done nothing to indicate he deserves anything other than a pay cut, and to turn down what was a fair deal from Jimmy to see if he could cash in, wasn't well liked by the guys at TSN.

I never believed there was a chance of both Cole and LaRose coming back, so I think this means bye bye LaRose unless things go extremely bad for him on the open market.

I'd say close, but more like:
(constant roster spot rotation as the Canes try figuring out why the first line isn't playing like expected)/Staal/Cole.
