probably not...

I have a feeling that Cole indeed took a home town discount. Not a big one but a discount, just to stay in the area.

cole would have looked like a real tool if he didnt take some kinda discount to stay here after all his talking to the media saying he wanted and expected to stay in Raleigh next year.

this was in Craig Custance's blog in the Sporting News today:

Quote:
TOP FIVE FREE AGENT VALUES

4. Chad LaRose, forward - I love Chad LaRose and I'm surprised that Carolina hasn't gotten a deal done with him. I started reporting a story on him during the Eastern Conference finals, and unfortunately never got around to writing it because the series ended faster than I expected. But people raved about him and how much he's battled to get where he is today. Wouldn't it be fitting if he landed in Detroit where he was a late cut twice by the Red Wings?
http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/ccustance.tsn/194477/

yeah, how "fitting" it would be

If it's anything like that trade from the other day that means we gave up Ruutu, McBain, Bellemore and Carson

Both. He made less then a million last year and is prettymuch a prototypical 4th line PK specialist. That said, he brings the sandpaper that this team needs and the size to go with it. He'll probably be signed to a reasonable enough contract that it's a legitimate possibility that we could make a move for him.

With Branecky saying 'More to come' and 'Still expecting another release at some point.' I have to wonder if this is LaRose or not. We did a fair bit of negotiating with him prior to today so I am unsure of the holdup here.

Minor league signing. Ryan and Dwyer were given new 2 way contracts.

Quote:
RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms on new, two-way contracts with restricted free agent forwards Patrick Dwyer and Michael Ryan.

“Patrick and Michael add important depth to our organization at the forward positions,” said Rutherford. “Both players had productive seasons last year and are capable of contributing at the NHL level.”

Dwyer, 25, made his NHL debut in 2008-09, skating in 13 games with Carolina during three recalls from Albany of the American Hockey League (AHL). He scored his first NHL goal at Philadelphia on Nov. 28, and also appeared in two Stanley Cup playoff games for the Hurricanes, recording one assist. In 62 games with Albany, Dwyer (5’11”, 175 lbs.) ranked second among River Rats skaters with 24 goals and fourth on the team with 40 points. The Hurricanes signed the Spokane, WA, native as a free agent on July 7, 2006. His new two-year contract will pay him $500,000 per season at the NHL level, and $105,000 at the AHL level.

Ryan, 29, played in 18 games with Carolina in 2008-09, recording two assists while averaging 8:12 of ice time. The Boston, MA, native led all River Rats skaters with 25 goals last season, despite playing in just 40 of the team’s 80 regular-season games. He was Albany’s leading scorer at the time of his final NHL recall on Feb. 15. In 83 career NHL regular-season games with Buffalo and Carolina, Ryan has scored seven goals and earned eight assists (15 points). The Hurricanes signed Ryan (6’1”, 188 lbs.) as a free agent on Oct. 31, 2008. His new one-year contract will pay him $500,000 at the NHL level and $100,000 at the AHL level, with $150,000 guaranteed.

Columbus goes crazy on the Pahlsson signing, 3 years at a good bit over 2.5 per. I have to wonder if that makes Malhotra a bit of an option if he's not asking for too much.

jr wants to sound the trumpets and celebrate having the same exact team minus seids back.

as mentioned before that means the same exact team that looked like a lottery team halfway through, squeeked into the playoffs to make a great run, only to be exposed in the semi's. we need some fresh blood, all teams do.

Way too conservative an approach for my liking. Christ, I'm surprised JR didn't hire John Fox after Lavy got fired.

^^^Guess I'm gonna have to disagree with that. I don't think we ever looked like a lottery team, but if we did that was before Mo, before Jussi, and before Cole. If we brought back essentially the same group I think we would have a decent team that should be able to make the playoffs while allowing guys like Boychuk and Bowman to play in the minors and get the occasional injury call up. I have always viewed this upcoming season as a sort of holding year leading up to the big offseason of 2010, and if we can have a holding year and still be a playoff team I would be quite pleased.
