This team is screwed in the short-term. At least it's only 5 years but we are now, as an organization, set back for 5 years.

anybody else feel happier after this post?

All in all, while again it's a couple hundred grand more than I would have liked, I think this is the best deal for us today. Between an injury prone Gaborik, an(IMO) supporting type player in Cammalleri or Gionta, I think re-signing the Twins made the most sense. Signing Hossa woldn't have been bad, but he would have been the sole component of a top line, perhaps featuring Kesler and Demitra as well. This is a good move for the Canucks, and it leaves enough cap space, IMO, to add a good defensemen.

~Canucklehead~
Fixing our top line with coveted UFAs would have been dicey (had the Twins been able to walk)....im glad Gillis/Twins/Barry were able to come to some sort of term.

It will be fun to see the youth being ushered in during the next 5 years.

By the way.....i do not think Gillis has officially stated that he is looking for an upgrade on defense.....anyone have a source that states otherwise?

Re: the Sedins, I would have preferred a 7 year deal, with a cap hit of 5.5 or 5.6.

Given their fitness, committment to good healthy lifestyles, and durability, the Sedins could be good for 7 years (i.e., 'til they are 35-36). That's not a Zetterberg-length contract, and it keeps the cap hit lower.

I think the sticking point in all this was the No Movement Clause. The Sedins compromised on term, the Nucks on the NMC. I guess...

A little higher than I would have liked, but it still leaves us with $7-8 million to fill out 4-5 roster spots. Enough room for a smaller signing, or a bigger one if a salary like Bieksa's gets moved.

It also depends on roster space, and historically the Canucks have not had it in terms of adequately placing Grabner on the roster.

I m just wondering if Sedins get a NTC in the deal. If they don't, they can be moved . Sign and trade.

Yeah, good to see Pauser's still alive. I was starting to wonder if we needed to send somebody out to keep him away from sharp objects and open windows.

It better be this way, i dont want to see the Sedins choking in the playoff again.

Since the lockout, the youth that has made it has been Kesler, Burrows, Raymond, Edler, Bieksa. That's not a bad group, really: more to the point, the youth has been "ushered in" all along. We need Hodgson and Grabner and etc to make the team just to stand still.

Hell, we need a miracle from Hodgson just to replace Demitra.

The question is, how do we make meaningful improvement in the next two-three seasons?

10 points in 10 games is not choking. No matter how you try to spin it.

We're at 46 mil, pretty much. Neidermeyer/Sundin back would be nice, but that's going to take some creative structuring.

This is similar to what JayBo got in Calgary except .5 million of the contract per year. Both deals are solid, IMO.

Dreger is reporting Roloson is going to the market, Oilers need a starting goaltender.

Yes, no-trade clauses were included.

I'm happy they're signed, I can't say I'm happy with the cap hit though. I liked the 12 year deal and thought we could negotiate the cap hit down a bit on that easier than a straight "5 year signing", but I'm not Gillis.

This is a great day in this particular forum.

The TSN panel are happy about the deal....Feaster is speculating that Lui's extension will be talked about.

Apparently if they don't win the Stanley Cup, they've choked.

I'm happy with the contract: length of term and compensation.

Now if something could be done about all the crying and whining about the Sedins... it's been going on for so many years and I'm absolutely sick of it. It never made any sense to me, and clearly can't be reasoned with (I don't even bother trying any more), so please, just give it a rest.

Sounds like Ohlund is signing in Tampa according to the NHL Network. Gain two Swedes, lose one.
