While I like the Lappy signing, I will agree that if this is the answer to our faceoff woes, then Homer is barking up the wrong tree.

I like the fact that he plays RW and can move over and take a draw or two, for versatility reasons, but that shouldn't be the main reason he is here. His main attribute is not in the faceoff circle.

I was under the impression that we would go after a guy like Pahlsson or Malhotra, and that Lappy was brought in for support on that 3rd line. I hope that's the case, and if that is the case, Lappy is a nice signing.

Lappy is a winger. So i don't know why homer or anyone think this will solve our faceoff problems. Homers next step should be to pick up a 3rd line center that can win draws. If not i don't know what the hell he is thinking. I don't want to see Cote playing in a game this coming up season. We have Asham, Carcillo, and Lappy. If we are going to keep all of them. We don't need an enforcer.

Yeah, I don't get why Holmgren is trying to sell us on his faceoff ability when he's a winger that isn't very good at faceoffs.

For sure, but it doesn't mean we have to use it? It's all about new beginnings, new memories, new team, new friends...new name?

It's all about...UGH!!!

I'm sure Homer would love to sign a big 3C like Malhotra or Bonk, but he needs to clear some more cap room first, either by trading one of the guys who has a clause, or Carle or Jones....

I'd bet on Jones. And having Lappy means that if we need to throw in Asham, Carcillo or even Lappy in a deal to get a centre and free up some cap space, we can do that too.

A lot of teams were interested in Lappy, maybe they'd take Asham instead? I like Asham, but no one is safe in our attempt to escape cap hell...

Meh, Asham makes 640K and expires after this season...Carcillo makes 893K and moving him would remove a bit of dumb from the roster. I also am much more comfortable with Asham playing up a line than Carcillo.

I don't mind having Asham, Lapp, and Carcillo on the roster. But there is not point for Cote to be on the roster. Yeah sure Carcillo, Lapp and Asham aren't enforcers but who says we need one??? The Redwings sure don't. The team toughness trumps the idea of having Cote. All three of them can actually contribute. Cote on the other hand.. Meh.

Again: "hard-nosed" isn't really a fitting name for a player who had at least 6 broken noses

Just call him Ian, a good old tough scottish name.

And if you get someone who will give you a player you need (3C) or a draft pick/prospect for Jones + one of Asham/Carcillo you do it in heart beat. Losing one of those guys would not create a huge hole in the roster, esp. after signing Laperriere.

I'd still prefer to lose Briere and sign a winger AND a centre, but it looks like the kibosh is on.

Briere has been good in the playoffs, but his contract has (and will continue to) severely handcuffed this team. Also, for a guy who scores like that to be a -23 over the past two seasons is pathetic. For what you're paying Briere you could almost sign Knuble, Bertuzzi, and Malhotra. And it isn't just what you could get for his contract, it's the fact that you have a TON more flexibility. You'd be hard-pressed to find a whole lot of people who are thrilled with Briere's deal. He's virtually untradeable.

I think what he brings is the only missing ingredient on this team at the moment, assuming the goalies play well.
I agree that he deserves more than Pahlsson and Madden, no question about that. That's why I could definitely see him getting upwards of $3M. Gonna be tough for Philly to give him that unfortunately.
