I believe he said at the start that his last priority is a D-Man
Argh, I expected Kovy to have a different kind of relationship with the city, but still... it's the business I guess.

They asked him about Beauchemin .. he said he made a lot of offers today and he would prefer to speak of the players who are here.

From what I gather, Gainey is done with the skilled players. He is looking for a D and some grit/bigger players.

I think this is great. He did a really smart thing and didn't sleep on getting the real talent out there. Gritty players are much easier to acquire, be it through trade or signings.

What a day! Gainey showed today how a superb a GM he is.His grasp of tactics and strategy is fantastic and he went on offense, probably buoyed with a new mandate from the Molson's.

I love how proactive he's been...which is probably causing most of the irrational angst among the media and fans.

I would hope so. Although I would hope for Tanguay to still be an option.

Maybe you should wait to see the final product on the ice and performing before calling Gainey a GM... the last I heard, he still gave up McDonagh for Gomez's contract... 5mil for a 20 goals scorer and 6mil for Cammaleri who won't be playing with Iginla this year.

Q & A from Gainey's press conference

Here is what I gathered for all of you from the press conference just now on RDS.

Q: How can you spend almost $100,000,000.00 in less than 24 hours?
A: It was time to be aggresive and make a splash today

Q: Is it over for Tanguay, Koivu and Kovalev in Montreal?
A: Yes

Q: Are you done for the season?
A: No, we have 6 defenceman under contract and will be looking for another

Q: What do you think abour Komisarek signing with Toronto?
A: We offered him a fair contract after studying comparables and he never got back to us at all

Q: You said you wanted a bigger centre/team, why is it that none of the forwards you signed are over 6 feet tall?
A: Today was the day to look for and sign talent and goal scorers

Q: Who will be the next captain of the team?
A: I didn't think about that, Jacques Martin will meet with me next week to talk about that

Q: Why did you trade McDonagh to New York, was he not developing to your liking?
A: He is a good prospect, however, we have the likes of Weber, Subban and Carle to make the jump soon and McDonagh met with us and had decided that he wasn't going to turn pro this season either and go back to school

Q: Is it a new team?
A: Yes, a new team with new chemistry

Q: Did you talk to Francois Beauchemin's agent today?
A: No, we felt our needs were fulfilled with Spacek and Gill

If anyone has anything else, please add it!

Gionta scored 48 goals playing with Gomez and Camalleri did have 80 pts playing with Frolov and Armstrong in LA.Don't be so negative. This line has the potential to be on of the best in the east, period.

No way... We'd need to trade Hamrlik, but then we'd have a huge hole in the back.

We have to hold onto the dream of waiting 4 years for our prospect to become what we want rather than win now.

That's how loser's think, while winners know that all players are assets to be used to make the team better anyway possible. But holding out the hope for McDonagh sure makes it easier to never having to make a tough choice and be always proven right in hindsight.that works in the online world, but not in real life.

They asked him about Koivu point blank, he said yesterday he had acquired a no.1 center and that Koivu was like any other player on the market and that he felt he needed to change the face of the team.

Reading between the lines, IMO he was upset at Koivu's lack of leadership last season when all the stuff was going on. I doubt he even made Koivu an offer.

I'm starting to like these acquisitions now. This team will be a hard working team that never stops trying, that is what I wanted to see last year. Seemed like a lot of times they were never really trying. Gomez, Cammalleri, and Gionta are always giving 110%.

I wonder if he's looking at a cheaper free agent d-man still, someone like Kurtis Foster or Nick Boynton.

Really, really liked this day, wasn't sure when I saw Spacek and Gill... but then Cammalleri and Gionta, not big of course, in fact really small, but so much scoring potential it's crazy ! The team has changed it's core completely in 1 day !

And also, I like the journalists that asked the right questions, and Gainey answered them the best way possible... still searching for 1 D.

And Komi never returned the call... bah, he was done... I was saddened, but much less after hearing this.

Anyway, I can't wait for the training camp... we have alot of young players, and I think with JM there will be a drastic change in philosophy...

So much changes, for those who whine, I'm sure you were critical of Gainey cause he wasn't doing much... you still whine ? Get a life then...

Exactly like you say it. When asked about Beauchemin he dodge the question put made it clear at the same time he had made an offer to him.

He also talked about durability.. I got the feeling he thought Koivu wasn't enough

I'm all for trading or waiving Hammer. Then get a tougher, cheaper D like Sarich or O'Brien.

Yeah he said "Today we have a younger team, a healthier team, a more durable team" That phrase stuck with me.

Glass half full, right.

The only sure about this lineup right now, is that nothing is sure. If they all go back at their PPG production, it's going to be a hell of a good season, but if they keep playing at their 65-70pts level, it's going to be a long 5 years.
