Cal O'Reilly

So O'Reilly had just over a PPG in the AHL last year and then came up at the end of the year filling in for injuries and played pretty big minutes for his first experience in the NHL registering 5 points in 11 games...

Where does he stand this year?

Does he have a spot to lose in the NHL level?

What are the expectations for him in 09/10...

Any responses are appreciated...

Where does he stand this year? somewhere on this club

Does he have a spot to lose in the NHL level? with the signings & statement from Poile about how he wants to get a FA replacement in the mold of Zanon, it looks like he has a spot to lose

What are the expectations for him in 09/10... I hope he improves on last season's performance, thats all I can ask of our rookies

Any responses are appreciated...

O'Reilly looked okay during his stint late in the year, but when he got separated from Sullivan, he struggled offensively. He doesn't have anything left to prove in the AHL, though, so we'll probably see him as our #3 center. I still worry about his size, though...

he'll make the roster because he's more ready than Santorelli or Spaling....not because he's particularly ready to be a full-time NHL player. We simply don't have any other options.

I do think that one potential band-aid solution that may be tried is to have him as our 2nd line center with Legwand moving to wing (and Erat on the other wing).

If we don't sign anyone else our options for a 6th player in the top 6 are (in order of likelihood):

Ward
Jones
Hornqvist
O'Reilly
Wilson
Pihlstrom
Tootoo
Santorelli
Belak/Smithson
Spaling/Jessiman/anyone posting here

Not a great spot to be in so I could see them trying something creative like O'Reilly or Wilson centering Legwand/Erat.
