I was waiting for this to happen. If a team ever wants to contend, they have to keep their leader, and Alfreddson surely is that for the Sens.

Looks like Melnyuk was serious when he said he would do whatever it takes to keep the Sens intact.

Fantastic news. It's incredibly rare to see players play their entire career in one organization in these days. How many players around or above Alfredsson's calibre can say that. Not that Alfie will retire a Sen, but it looks and sounds like that right now. Also, the guy guaranteed a Cup back in November, but he never guaranteed it this year. Looks like he has at least 6 more chances.

Great to hear.. it's nice that a lot of the key players on Canadian teams (Smyth, Bertuzzi, Alfreddson) are signing deals to stay longer. Hopefully all the teams can hold on to their key players under the future CBA..

Great signing!

Not only does it keep our heart and soul on this team for the immediate and long-term future, it really sets the tone on contracts for this team.

With players like Hossa, Chara, Havlat, Spezza, Redden, etc. on this team that will all be dealing with contract negotiations in the next few years, it's good to be able to point to one player, who has shown consistency at a high-level year-to-year as the standard bearer on the team. If other guys want to earn that type of money in Ottawa, the requirement to do so couldn't be more clear: Play hard every game, and show you have the talent to sustain it for more than a season or two. Oh yeah, and you better be a leader in the playoffs.

Not bad, not bad at all. Might be a little nervous that he's been playing lights out the past couple of weeks angling for a fat contract. Time will tell though.

I don't think that we have to worry about that. He's been like that for most of his career.

This is a great message to send to the players on our team though. You want big money...play like Alfie does!

It's a great presidence for the team!

I'm so excited!

This is a good thing for both the NHL and Ottawa. It kind of sets the bar for this summer and the value to top end tallent. This is fair, IMO, because as a player, he does deserve to make some good coin, but it isn't overly disgusting (al la Keith Tkachuck or Jagr).
