Not a fan of Kovalev at all, but he is Kopitar's favorite player.

I don't get why everyone is upset at us not giving someone a 5 or 6 year deal to players who are hurt almost every year. Havlat played a full season last year because he was in his contract year, and thats why Chicago only wanted to re-sign for 1 more year.

I don't know why anybody should be crushed. Scoring wingers are out there, not all of them are UFAs who must be signed the first day, some can be traded for.

The strong hint from Lombardi was that he would be trading, rather than losing his mind overspending and giving away so much of what he has previously built, just to play with the other drunken sailor GMs on the annual NHL Day of Insanity that is July 1.

I sure as hell didn't want to give either Gaborik or Havlat 5 or 6 year terms. How soon we all forget the chronic injury problems they both have had. I will be shocked if either of those guys comes anywhere close to playing 82 games this season.

Crushed? Already? Are all the Kings options closed down already? No way. They're just starting to open up in fact.

It's trivial, but Kovalev ALWAYS comes into camp in shape like a ****ing olympic athlete. There is no denying his commitment on that end.

Who's close to the cap that is going to have to move major players? Philly? Hartnell, Gagne? San Jose? Cheechoo?

Why does beer from a 40 ouncer of Coors Light taste different than the regular cans and bottles?

Not sure you want Kovalev with this young core...

Hossa fine..Gaborik fine...Havlat at $5MM is very reasonable. I think DL is going to have explain himself on that one...Yes he is a bit of an injury risk, but he's a top notch young first line player...

Great point, forgot about that.

With that in mind Kovalev could be a good compromise for Kopitar. I feel like Dean is worried that if he gives Kopi and superstar winger before he gets his act together himself, Dean somehow thinks that will discourage Kopi. As much as we want him to, Dean doesn't seem to want to take any pressure off of Kopi. If anything he wants to add pressure. Kovalev is not a world beater anymore by any means, but if Kopi idolizes him, it could be a nice reward for Kopi without worrying about him having someone on his line who will do all the work. Kovalev can still be dangerous, but he would still need Kopi to be on top of his game to be effective.

... trying to be positive.

If we sign Kovalev and pay anywhere close to the same price as what Havlat and Gaborik are going to make then DL needs to be slapped in the face. Kovalev is old and has no place on this team(even for one season). Gaborik and Havlat could have been Kings for the next 5 yrs and fit right into our plans. Anything more then 3.5 mill for Kovalev would be a complete waste. No point in signing an old lazy russian so our team can be just good enough to not get a solid pick this year. If we were going to sign anyone it should be young players (like Gabby or Havlat) and to mid term deals, 5 years in length.

@Eklund: Beauchemin to LA Kings (e3) (apparently they are only a year apart)

No, I was with you three years ago. I just have more patience. I was a fan of the 1978 NY (Joe Pisarcik) Giants. It took that wreck of an organization 6 years to make a serious playoff run and 8 years to win a Super bowl after bringing in a real GM. I feel I know how this works.

Let me leave you with one thought. Championships are won as much by moves NOT made as with those moves that ARE made. We did not blow our wad today on guys that will hold the Cup up one day. We do have dry powder. That will be evident in the next six weeks.

I will make one prediction. The Rangers will not win the Cup in the next 5 (at $7.5mm) years.

You know, just because you can afford to pay them, doesnt mean they'll sign, right?

if this team got Kovalev, Beauch, and Biron, they're much better than they were yesterday.

Beauchemin was rumored to be seeking 4.5 a season. Pretty hefty, but he'd be a great fit here.

Now thats more unreasonably optimistic than expecting the Kings to have signed a star winger!

True dat.

I just want improvement. Something. Added toughness, great. Better goaltending, cool. 20-30 extra goals? Beautiful.

I like Beauch, but I agree with Pierre Maguire that he was somewhat protected in anaheim by pronger and scotty.
