There is still a possibility that he will be signed. It all depends on what offers he's looking at, what D-man bob is still targeting. It can be done under the right circumstances. Probably would have to put Metro on waivers to get it done. Camalarri would then be your 2nd line center rather than winger.

Here's what I gathered from Bob Gainey's press conference (also translated in English):

Reporter: "Saku Koivu, Alex Tanguay, is it over for them in Montreal?"*

Mr. Gainey: "Yes, for the time being, I believe so. We've spent some money today on other players. Alex had tabled a proposal to us this afternoon, but it really comes down to timing, and we already had a player who accepted an offer. We were therefore ready to fill a void before potentially losing both players to other teams."

*Before saying "Koivu", the reporter mentioned "Kovalev", but it doesn't appear Mr. Gainey heard him as another reporter was attempting to speak to him. I really do think that Bob Gainey was referring to Alex Tanguay.

As for Alex Kovalev:

Mr. Gainey: "We've received a number from Alex Kovalev, but it's not a number that we agree with at this time."

I still think Alex Kovalev could very well re-sign with the Canadiens.

Country Flames, I would LOVE...to get Kovy back...would he take the pay cut though?

Sigh...I hope so...So many fantastic players take pay cuts for "their" teams...for freeking once I would like to see the hometown discount happen in MTL....sigh...

Here is to dreaming...

the reason why Kovy is not with the Habs is Greenspan, his agent.

i will restrain myself from throwing racial slurs.

All these moves and upgrades are just not the same if Kovalev isn't back.

Still... so satisfied... especially this 26 years old Cammalleri...

Ya it would be sweet if we can get him re-signed. I mean we still have about 8.8 mil left in cap space after you take everyone we currently have signed at the moment and put it together.

So IMO give AK27 a 2 year deal worth his usual 4.5-mil/year or MAX 5-mil/year .... and we'd still be 4.3 mil or 3.8 mil under the cap....which we can use to get another 'OK' d-man or have for an emergency as a reserve.....just my 2 cents lol

Kovalev could still sign with the habs

I was reading earlier that Kovalev's agent said that he will make a decision tommerow wheather he signs with the habs. He wanted to see what changes Gainy would make and how the team would look before signing. Also on the fourth period's twitter page, it says "Received text... Habs signing of Gionta doesn't mean they're done. Habs still have cap space to add another top-six forward, likely Kovalev" -
https://twitter.com/TheFourthPeriod

So who knows maybe Kovy might take a hometown discount and still remain a hab.

That' s not what gainey said to the press.

The offers were on the table to Kovalev and gionta. Gionta accepted the offer so hat's it. No money left over for Kovalev, need to sign The RFA and a number 6 or 7 defenceman.

^^ Unless he doesn't sign the RFA's since they get better deals from other teams and we get draft picks from that.

That's the only way I see AK47 coming back ... unless after we sign the RFA's he's willing to take a MASSIVE HOMETOWN discount lol

I don't know where all the false reports came from, but many are out there. On the official NHL site for instance:

Report: Kovalev back with Canadiens

Getting Kovalev back with one year deal would be great, could give nice cap flexibility for next off-season (right now Habs have only Metropolit's, Price's and Halak's contracts expiring next off-seasons).

Actually, Sergei and Lapierre also have one year left on their contracts.

It's very tight, but three more options can create some cap space:

a. Buying out Laraque gains $1M per year for the first two years, but costs 0.5M per year for the following two. The $1M can be used for the seventh defenceman, with a bit left over.

b. Leaving Pacioretty in the minors for one more year, thus absorbing the first $875k of Kovalev's salary.

c. Allocating some of Kovalev's compensation as BONUSES. The bonus amount can then be deferred to next year's cap, but likely won't need to be because it is unlikely that Price and Sergei Kostitsyn will earn all of their bonus money.

7.357 Gomez
6.000 Camalleri
5.000 Gionta
4.500 Kovalev (including 1.000 bonuses)
3.250 A. Kostitsyn
1.900 Plekanec - 1 year
1.100 Latendresse - 2/3 years
1.000 Metropolit
0.817 S. Kostitsyn
0.688 Lapierre
0.650 d'Agostini - 2 years
0.500 Chipchura - 1 year
0.500 Stewart - 1 year

5.750 Markov
5.500 Hamrlik
3.833 Spacek
2.250 Gill
1.100 Gorges
0.942 O'Byrne
0.600 7th defenceman

2.200 Price
0.775 Halak

0.500 Laraque Buyout

56.711 Total for 22 players
0.089 Space available, however it is really more due to Price and S.Kost bonuses that will surely not be all earned.

Pacioretty or Weber could be injury callups and their cap hits would only be counted for the days they are with the big club.

I'll be up front with everybody and say I'm a fan of Kovalev. He's an amazing player who has his faults for sure, but there simply hasn't been a more exciting player in a Habs jersey for a long time.

We now have some real, proven talent in our top 6. This is the perfect time for Kovy to come back and really lead this team deep into the playoffs, as long as we get the goaltending of course. What the owners/management should remember is that the people in the seats want SOME of the old guard around, and by that I don't mean the Kostitsyn's or Latendresse or Laps. We're talking franchise players here, like Koivu or Kovalev. These are the players that fans get really excited about. These players are the face of the organization. I think it's very important to bring one of them back - but more likely Kovalev.

We lost Higgins who was always thought to be the future captain of the team... we lost Komisarek who was a leader and well liked, we're losing Koivu most likely who has been an excellent captain and a huge community figure. Add onto the fact that we're likely also losing Tanguay who many liked and we're excited that he was coming to the team, Lang who just seemed to fit in perfectly, and even Bouillon and Brisebois for a lot of people - and losing Kovy would just make it seem like a whole new team. It's hard to latch onto something like that. Myself, I feel disconnected with this new team. It's not like I don't care, but it's just such a huge change that it's really going to take some time to get comfortable with them again. It will be a few years before I can envision some of the new players as franchise players.

Bring back Kovy. Not only for his skill, but for the fans who deserve some semblance of the old team to feel comfortable, and to pass the torch to the new team as they make the transition. Here's hoping!

I would love to have kovy back for 1-2 more years. By far the most exciting player on the habs.

I guess it's not realistic to expect him back. Where might he go ?

The Fourth Period is reporting that the Habs have pulled their 2 year offer off the table but that talks are still ongoing.
