Leafs 3rd last in ESPN's ultimate franchise rankings

In the annual ESPN franchise rankings, the Maple Leafs finish 3rd last, ahead of the Clippers and the Knicks. Professional sports franchises are ranked based on their ability to pay fans back for their investment of time, money and passion.

The report was the result of exclusive and original analysis by ESPN The Magazine and the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center, combined with fan feedback data gathered by the consulting firm Maddock Douglas, ESPN.com and GMI NetReflector. More than 50,000 responses were collected. The analysis is used to determine how franchises establish and maintain the greatest overall reward for their fans.

Here are the top 10- in bold NHL franchises:

1 Los Angeles Angels MLB
2 Carolina Hurricanes NHL
3 Pittsburgh Steelers NFL
4 Detroit Red Wings NHL
5 Cleveland Cavaliers NBA
6 Washington Capitals NHL
7 Milwaukee Brewers MLB
8 Pittsburgh Penguins NHL
9 San Antonio Spurs NBA
10 St. Louis Blues NHL

I'm not surprised where the Leafs are ranked...are you?

That probably doesn't account for the other franchises that the Leafs' fans are paying the freight for.

Desjardins estimates that about 40% of the game is captured by Corsi analysis.

It's reasonable, when you have the largest fan nation in the NHL, when you win you're going to win big, but when you lose you're goign to lose big.

Imagine if this season the leafs won the cup, downtown toronto would become a scene from the Lord of the Flies.

So it's fair to say that close to the same should happen when we're one of the worsed teams in the league.

Carolina is the best NHL Franchise?

WHAT?...So they are basing it on paying fans back? Thats definately Detroit (Who makes the playoffs every year, does stupidly well (other than a few failures)), not Carolina..Sorry

It's a funny system. Detroit is second in the NHL, yet they have trouble drawing sell-outs.

Well, remember most of the jobs in Detroit deal with cars, and with most car companies going down the toilet (in a way), you cant really sell out...and its not that easy of a drive from Toronto or Hamilton to Windsor (4 or so hours) so there isn't a lot of Canadian Impact..

It's been this way for a year or two now, before the Economy really went into the crapper. The auto industry does impact it, but they had trouble selling tickets before it became a huge issue. Alot of it had to do with the style of play and the expectation that there will be something more (ie Stanley Cup finals tickets).

As for the drive, it's a little lengthy. I know of a few people that went down to games in Detroit this year. Good deal for tickets and good hockey. It's not easy (like going to Buffalo), but it's not insane either.

Did anyone hear the interview yesterday? the guy was a moron...

His logic made zero sense (too account for his rankings)

The reason we were ranked soo low was because MLSE didn't have any competition therefore everyone in the GTA was forced to watch leaf games. He said if Hamiliton got a team it would hurt MLSE and it would result in less profit and less sell-outs to their games.

There's actually a lot of factors that go into the rankings in addition to fan ratings. One of the biggest reasons the LA Angels came in so high is because their average ticket price is $20 and if I'm not mistaken out of 81 home games/year they have 75 days where they give away something. The Carolina Hurricanes are in the same boat with regards to ticket prices IIRC.

Basically all I'm saying is that its not just about championships.

Most of you have no idea what this rating/poll is about and cannot read the OP's post properly. I'm just surprised Leafs are 3rd last and not last.

In response to ESPN I shall invoke the Internet acronym database and say GTFO.

If I want to waste my life cheering for the Leafs then by golly nobody is going to stop me!

P.S. TSN is better.
