Sure - but the LAST thing the Canucks needed to be spending money on was a player to play with the Sedins. Burrows showed that he can be that guy - this is totally unnecessary. Given the cap hit here, and the fact that cap space is so precious right now, I'd say that this is easily the WORST signing by the Canucks since the inception of the cap.
burrows isn't and shouldn't be a lock with the sedins last year. he has to prove he can capture lightning again and not be the next carter/pyatt, so why not bring in a guy who could potentially have success on that top line if burrows falters?
I just don't see the big problem with signing this guy, he's averaged 40 points without putting in top minutes. 2.5m for 3 years is decent and leaves lots of cap room, it's a great depth move. Doesn't cause any problems for next year, either. Certainly better than Gaborik or Cammalleri for 7.5m and 6m.
I think people expecting him to play with the Sedins or be a second liner will be quite disappointed, but I also think he'll be solid enough. Think Taylor Pyatt...

Not that I'm disagreeing... I have never been that high on Samuelsson, but I don't think I ever dismissed him overall.... I do remember having a discussion (it might have been with you even) about how Detroit was not going to move him during the season as a salary dump, when he was an effective player for them and a solid playoff performer.... I do remember having that discussion with several posters, convinced that Detroit would never move him.
I also remember saying in the past that he would be one of the guys that wouldn't return to Detroit after his contract was done, because of cap situations.

I proposed a trade of Naslund for Samuelsson, near the trade deadline as the cap hit for Detroit was going to be minimal, but I was shot down because you did not believe that Samuelsson was a legit winger on the 1st line due to his limited goal scoring prowess.
the guy's still been there, and knows what it takes for a team to win, and that experience, no matter how much of a role he had, is vital.

Pfft, don't put too much stock into the gloating "HAHA!" post of farewell. Look at the Canucks board, whenever we trade someone they suddenly become the world's worst player. A perfect example would be Bernier.
He isn't the greatest player. But he throws a lot of hits, he works hard, and he stands up for his teamates. Yes, he misses easy scoring chances, but he has potential to develop.
Were he to be traded, you would see a lot of Canuck fans going off on him saying "he's terrible! He has no hands! What a bust! Isbister v 2.0! Enjoy wasting your time on him!" etc etc.

And last year we were going to finish in Bottom 10 with the moves Gillis made, look how that worked out. It's clear that most fans have no clue when it comes to hockey.

Not a fan of Samuelsson at all. 3 years at $7.5mil makes me even less of a fan. Very questionable signing with the amount of young players that could fill this role for a fraction of the cost.
On the flipside, if Samuelsson can develop chemistry with the twins we may have a guy that can score 25-30 goals on their wing. The fact he's got an excellent RH shot could potentially make this work.

I agree, not a fan of Samuelsson at that price at all...
but I always thought that Burrows isn't the best fit with the Sedins... he is an effective player on his own, so why have him on a line were the other 2 create most of the offense?
Personally, I like Burrows with Kesler... I'm hoping they get reunited... call it a #2 line or a #2b or whatever, but IMO we're a stronger team when Burrows and Kesler are out against the opposition's top lines - they can still produce in that role, while shutting down the opposition's top threats.

Plug in the rest on their wings, and IMO we have a better team for match-ups overall...
Daniel-Henrik-Samuelsson (top line, top PP)
Burrows-Kesler-Bernier (#2 minutes overall, top PK, top shutdown assignments)
Raymond-Hodgson-Demitra (#3 line, 2nd offensive unit, 2nd PP line)
Hordichuk-Johnson-Rypien/Hansen (4th line, not much icetime, #2 PK unit).
IMO the above gives us good balance and good match-up options.
I am so tired of hearing about how Gillis has done "nothing." Signing the Sedins is not nothing, I dont care that they were on the team last year; that is completely irrelevant. If the Canucks had dumped them and signed two 100% identical players who played on a different team last year, people would be praising Gillis. Instead he signs probably the two most valuable players he could sign, and so he's done nothing. Idiotic.

Probably the best way looking at it. Samuelsson deserved a raise from his time in Detroit, he was getting it somewhere and I'm glad he got it on a team like Vancouver who will be very competitive next year.
Samuelsson like all borderline top 6 players will frustrate you, but he works hard, is a good two-way player and has the ability to score clutch goals in the regular season and playoffs.
I'm not trying to hype him up to anything more than he is, but as long as he plays within himself he'll be productive for Vancouver.
