It would be beyond hilarious if Versteeg and Barker became UFA after this.

Well, the White Sox got Carlton Fisk after a clerical error made him a free agent. They certainly didn't complain then.

Thats the fun thing about all this...

There is history of mistakes similar to this resulting in some insane consequences.

Good times!

Well ofcourse the NHLPA cares. They also work for the players. This will be very interesting to see how much of a fuss the union makes. I can see them making a big fuss, especially if the Hawks players demand they go to UFA.

The thing about it is there's no wiggle room, if they didn't file in time then the qualifying offers will be deem invalid and they will become free agents.

I have to hand it to the NHL. This is an excellent way to keep people talking hockey during All-Star weekend. At the latest, Tuesday morning this will become a non-story.

how could you possibly mess something up this bad?. . . Versteeg and Barker could be major blows if they become free agents. . big brain cramp by Chicago.

If things weren't done properly, then the league should make these players UFA's, imo. I remember when Toronto had a deal that would have got us a big name player, and because of a fax problem, the deal was nixed by the league. I don't see why Chicago shouldn't suffer a similar fate. UFA's all around!!! Wooo Hooo!

Blackhawks fans are trying to brush this off like it's no big deal and nothing will come from it, but if the league is actually investigating this it tells me something is up.

Nope not gonna happen. Barker has way to much size for Montreal.

The 2000 NJD precedent is VERY bad for Chicago. I'm actually starting to think these guys may hit UFA.

Quote:
5. The New Jersey Devils had an option to renew the contracts of defenceman Brian Rafalski and forward John Madden, but forgot to send out the necessary paperwork.

As a result, both players qualified to become free agents without compensation.

Rafalski was due to earn US$450,000 this season and Madden $550,000. Knowing the Devils, they could have expected 10 percent raises for the next few seasons.

Instead, general manager Lou Lamoriello had to cave in big time. Rafalski got a four-year, $11-million deal. Madden will earn $7 million over the same span.

To make matters worse, an arbitrator ruled that since this was an unusual type of free agency, these salaries can be used as comparables for every young player in the league who goes to arbitration.

The players could cash in big time if they so choose.

Think this maybe really serious.

Additional sources say qualifying offers are not supposed to be mailed.

Overnight delivery via courier and direct fax to the players agent is preferred and certified or registered mail is acceptable only if the other means are unavailable.

Tallon says fax copies of the offers were sent to the league, so he doesn't anticipate any significant fall out.

hilarious to fans of all the other pro sports. Would just be another reason for them to think hockey is a joke. No thanks. I'd rather watch Chicago grow into a monster and lose these kids in the proper manner.

Yup.

The "One Hundred Percent" Rule limits the yr-to-yr change in salary/bonuses in a multi-year SPC. From year to year the salary can increase by 100% or decrease by 50% of the salary in year 1 or year 2 (whichever is smaller).

Hossa's contract is fine. It is allowed to decrease by up to to $3.95M (50% of $7.9M) yr-to-yr.

An argument from the NHLPA could mean this has some legs.

Article 10.2(a)ii states:

Quote:
In order to receive a Right of First Refusal or Draft Choice
Compensation (at the Prior Club's option) with respect to a
Restricted Free Agent, the Prior Club of a Restricted Free Agent
must tender to the Player, no later than 5:00 p.m. New York time
on the later of June 25 or the first Monday after the Entry Draft of
the final year of the Player's SPC, a "Qualifying Offer", which
shall be an offer of an SPC
An argument could be made that, based on the wording, the PLAYER was not tendered the offer. While the NHL was notified of the qualifying offers, the Player was not notified until after the deadline.

In the end they will likely remain RFA's, but it isn't as cut and dry as some people are claiming it is.

Hopefully the league doesn't puss out because there's a salary cap, which is the big difference between this situation and ours. That screwup probably caused my ticket prices to go up.
